  1. You should not buy levels that cannot be adjusted. There is a misconception that manufacturers produce tools to certain standards, which eliminates the need for customization. Each purchased building level requires preliminary configuration.
  2. Do not use the tool without checking that it works correctly.
  3. It is better not to buy levels whose design does not have adjusting screws located near each flask, 2 on each side. The screws should have wide heads: this makes adjustments easier and faster.
  4. It is not recommended to store the level without a cover. Foamed polystyrene foam is suitable for its production. In this case, you can be sure that the level flasks will not be damaged.
  5. The level should not be allowed to fall from a height. This may cause the bulb to crack or the instrument to become out of tune.
  6. It is better not to buy a level whose body is made of fragile material. Experts advise giving preference to levels whose body is made of wood, aluminum or durable plastic. The duration of use of such levels is several orders of magnitude longer.

When the level is perfectly horizontal, it is exactly within the mark.

What do the divisions on the flask mean?

At first glance at this measuring device, the question arises about the purpose of the marks. There are two types of divisions on the ampoule with liquid:

  1. Marking - internal wide stripes. Needed to control compliance with the absolute horizontal position: when placing a spirit level on the surface, the bubble becomes between them.
  2. Error marks are located behind the marking marks, closer to the edges. The slope is determined by the division value indicated in the instructions.

The unit of measurement is millimeter per linear meter. Levels with a rotating mechanism and error marks are capable of recording angular deviations.

The principle of operation of a water pass

The operating principle is based on the action of gravity. A substance with greater density and weight (in this case, the liquid in the flask), under the influence of the Earth’s gravitational field, tends to find a lower position. Relatively light (air) rushes upward. Since its density is several hundred times less than the density of any liquid, the bubble always occupies the top position. It acts as a reference point on the measuring instrument.

Each device has a working side, it is not difficult to determine: the metal on it looks rougher, as if this part was processed with a circular saw. Inexpensive models have only one main side, which is what is applied to the object being tested. If you mistakenly use another face to take measurements, the result will have a large error. This is not allowed in precision work.

Before using a level with non-fixed flasks, it must first be checked for accuracy and adjusted. To do this, place the spirit level on a flat horizontal surface, fix the position of the bubble, turn it 180° and mark the position of the air indicator. A working tool will show identical results. If adjustment is necessary, the position of the ampoules is changed using special fastening screws until the indicators become the same.

A level is a professional equipment that determines the vertical and horizontal and illuminates it with a laser beam.
