Converting a starter into an electric motor with your own hands

Anyone who often travels off-road sooner or later understands the need for such a simple device as a winch. Today, a wide selection of devices is available on the market, the cost of which varies depending on the complexity of the design itself, traction force and the ambitions of the manufacturer.

If your budget is not enough to purchase such a device, you can try making a winch with your own hands. Of course, not everyone will dare to take such a step: it is much easier to install a ready-made device. However, if you like manual labor, you will definitely think about making your own car winch.

There are several types of homemade winches: these can be devices with hydraulic, manual or electric drive. The operating principle of such a device is as follows: a cable is wound onto a drum, which is then rotated by hand or by a motor. Let's look at each type of winch in more detail.

Electric winch

The engine most often used is car starters, which are modified to operate in motor mode. Generators from trucks can also be used. You can also use electric motors from other equipment. An electric drive, regardless of its origin, must have high power, high torque and consume little current. This will avoid draining the battery.

Hydraulic winch

The hydraulic drive for the winch is much more complex in design. To create it, as a rule, you need an oil pump, an oil tank and a drive. Despite the fact that the design of the hydraulic drive itself is complex and cumbersome, a winch with a hydraulic motor has a great advantage over an electric drive winch. It provides significant traction force with relatively low energy consumption. Hand winch

A manual winch is manufactured using almost the same principle as other types of winches. The role of the engine in this device is performed by a person. The power of the device depends only on the physical effort of the operator and the length of the lever.

Main elements of the winch

The main unit of the winch is a drum with a cable. If you can find a ready-made drum that doesn't require any modifications, that would be ideal. If you don’t have one at hand, you’ll have to do it yourself. A section of thick-walled pipe is quite suitable for this purpose. It is necessary to weld cheeks to it, with a thickness of 4 to 5 mm.

Depending on the type of winch, a gear may be welded in one of the cheeks. The pipe must also be equipped with seats for bearings. To make a drum, a pair of hubs from a Zhiguli is quite suitable. You just need to sharpen the thin end and weld both halves of the drum.

The best gearbox is a worm gearbox with a large gear ratio. The advantage of such a gearbox is that when used to create a winch, there is no need for a drum brake. In order to ensure safe use of the winch, it is best to provide a remote control panel. If you make your own electric winch using a starter, then it is better to use a starter equipped with a planetary gearbox. Some Zhiguli engines are equipped with such a unit.

Making a winch from a starter

It is necessary to make a platform from a sheet of metal on which all the components will be attached. You need to weld the seats for the drum shaft to it and install it. Then the gearbox is connected with the input shaft upward. A homemade adapter is attached to the gearbox for installing a starter. A gear with a corresponding tooth module is mounted on the input shaft. Now you just need to secure the starter and arrange the wiring, and you can use the winch.

Hi all! I haven’t looked at you for a long time, and now there’s a reason to share information on how to make an electric boat motor. everything was done for the sake of humor, after sad looks at the prices of gasoline at gas stations, from what came into hand. the original is here alozovoy.livejournal.com/12409.html so the second test was carried out on the water of the motor from starter 2109 based on the “leg” of the fireworks. Let me remind you that in 1 test the motor covered about 50 meters with pauses (so as not to overheat) on a 60 Ah battery; for the last test we made several modifications to reduce gluttony: the external windings were soldered from parallel mode (2 pieces each) to serial (4 pieces), and the cooling hole was also plugged as unnecessary. The motor covered about 300-500 meters on a freshly charged battery, which in itself is not bad. speed by eye is about 3 km/h (cauldron + 2 people), does not go against the wind (10-15ms). in principle, the result is more positive than negative, and a good starter with soldered windings and rolling bearings, as well as a couple of tank batteries will save the father of Russian democracy ;)))

Interesting experience. Please tell me how long a purchased electric motor runs with a standard battery.

minn kota pro 32 at 72a/h runs for about 2 hours at speed 5 at about 5-6 km/h.

Your sarcasm is quite understandable; somehow the results obtained by Alexander are not very impressive. Yesterday I returned from fishing and saw with my own eyes how a local villager moves to Ob-3 with the help of an electric motor assembled from an Strela leg and “some kind of starter.” He himself cannot answer what the starter is from, the local electrician says, he doesn’t very resourceful, but quite powerful. It looks about 15cm in diameter, height (the engine itself) is about 40-45cm. I would say either from the KRAZ, or from the combine. He has been using it for about a year and a half. At first, before each trip out on the water, he carried a 6 ST-132 battery into the boat (it probably holds about 35-40 kg). And yesterday I saw that he had a brand new 6 ST-60 with calcium. He says that it’s a little slower than the old one, but it’s much lighter. The battery capacity is enough for about two hours of travel. He doesn’t know the speed, but a channel 1 km long passes in 15 minutes. He always goes to the water alone with his wife. catches crayfish. If I had known that there would be such a topic, I would have taken a photo of it.
