Anchor bolts with a ring and a half ring: what are they for?

A home craftsman should know about fastening elements such as an anchor bolt with a ring and a half-ring (hook), and also be able to use them. This fastener is intended for concrete, brick, and some types of natural stone. It is difficult or even impossible to hammer or screw standard nails and self-tapping screws without dowels into such materials, since they are very dense.

This system is not effective in porous and soft materials. The fasteners differ from each other in their ending: one has a ring, the other has a half-ring that looks like a hook.

Design Features

Anchor bolts consist of the same elements:

  • regular hex nut;
  • washer – distributes pressure when tightening the bolt;
  • slotted spacer;
  • a flare nut that will fit into the spacer sleeve;
  • rod with external thread.

This is a spacer sleeve
. The spacer sleeve expands when the flare nut is inserted into its body.

The flare nut has entered the spacer sleeve

As a result, the friction force increases sharply.

This is how the spacer sleeve expands

The thickness of the fasteners varies: M6, M8, M10, M12 and more up to M28. The length also differs - anchor bolts can be short or very long, up to 300 mm.

Anchor bolts are made from various steels:

  • carbon - the simplest and most affordable;
  • stainless – alloys of grades A1, A2, A3 are used;
  • galvanized – zinc is applied by galvanic spraying and protects fasteners from corrosion;
  • brass - this alloy itself perfectly resists corrosion; brass fasteners can be installed even under water.

Brass fasteners do not rust

Application of Anchor Bolt

Mechanical anchors are good for low-porosity substrates. Chemical models are indispensable for materials with an abundance of gas capsules, for example, cellular types of concrete. Installing an anchor bolt If you focus on the structure of the fastener: -A bolt with a hook or ring is good for fixing hinge systems, objects on cables and chains. It is important to be able to remove the item from the bolt to move it to a new place, or wash it and hang it back. -A bolt with a nut is used for dense and monolithic bases, since the spacer fastening system is not effective in porous and soft materials. The nut perfectly holds gates and stairs, secures cables and pipelines.

In everyday life, a concrete anchor bolt is useful for periodically dismantled structures. These are doorways and suspended ceilings. - Wedge bolts are also used in dense and monolithic foundations, both for capital construction and private farmsteads. Wedges are used to attach advertising boards to foundations, posters to house facades, warehouse consoles to walls, and light fixtures to ceilings. In everyday life, wedge bolts are often used when installing punching bags and home sports corners. -Anchors-studs hold ceilings and partitions, supporting consoles, masts, cables and antennas. Some types of anchors for dense foundations are divided into those suitable for true monoliths and those that have cracked.

The stud bolt, for example, comes in the HAS and HST categories. Models of the latter allow you to securely fix objects to cracked concrete and make through fastenings. This increases the "weight" of HST anchor bolts in the eyes of builders. The nuances of using anchors depend on their weight, size, and material. There are, for example, brass or steel bolts. If the fastener is made of an iron alloy and is an M-6 size, it will withstand up to 2.8 kilonewtons of pullout. The shear anchor will withstand 3.6 kilonewtons. As a rule, the performance characteristics of anchor bolts are indicated on their packaging. It remains to correctly calculate the stress forces in the walls and ceilings. If you are not confident in your abilities in the exact sciences, it is better to order calculations from professionals or play it safe by taking the most reliable fasteners. They appear to be useful in most areas of construction, since they can even withstand load-bearing structures such as ceiling beams.

Installation

To drill a hole in concrete or brick, you need either a hammer drill with a drill, or a drill with impact mode and a concrete drill. Take a drill of the same diameter as the spacer. Accordingly, if the sleeve has a diameter of 6 mm, then the drill is taken to 6 mm. Drill a hole to the same length as the fastener, and even a little deeper, since pieces of concrete and dust may remain in the hole, and you need to insert the anchor all the way.

Having installed the fastener in the hole, tighten the hex nut, due to which the flare nut will begin to fit into the spacer sleeve. The latter will open and rest its three petals against the walls of the hole. Due to this, the anchor will be tightly installed. Dismantling is simple - you need to unscrew the pin from the spacer sleeve. The bushing cannot be pulled out of the hole. It remains in the concrete. The remaining hole can be plastered or puttied.

When dismantling, the pin is unscrewed, and the spacer sleeve remains in the hole

Do not tighten the fasteners too loosely or too tightly. In the first case, the anchor bolt will not be firmly fixed in the hole, and it will collapse over time under load. If you overdo it with tightening, you can break the threads, which will cause the fasteners to become unusable.

Tightening the anchor bolt may require a torque wrench to control the torque.

The cost of one M8 anchor bolt is about 50-60 rubles.

If you choose the right anchor bolt in length and diameter in accordance with the load, and install it correctly, it will withstand a significant load.

Anchor device

This type of fastener consists of an anchor sleeve and a bolt with a thread and a ring. At its end there is usually a nut screwed on, which has a cone-shaped shape and serves to expand the sleeve. The direct purpose of such a product is to fasten various heavy suspended structures.

For example, a ring anchor is often used when installing scaffolding or when installing guy wires. But when installing a fastening element, be sure to keep in mind the material of the surface into which it is installed. Technologically, it is possible to screw an anchor bolt into solid brick, concrete or natural stone. In a hollow material, it loses its strength properties.

Product parameters

The manufacturer produces ring screws in the following size range:

  • 3.5x45 mm;
  • 4x40 mm;
  • 5x50 mm;
  • 5x75 mm;
  • 6x65 mm;
  • 8x80 mm;
  • 8x90 mm;
  • 8x120 mm;
  • 8x160 mm;
  • 10x120 mm;
  • 10x160 mm;
  • 10x220 mm;
  • 12x90 mm;
  • 12x120 mm.

Screws of different sizes are sold in stores. The following sizes are often found and used: from 3.5x30 mm to 10x140 mm.

Screws have different weights. A thousand pieces of hardware, depending on the size, weigh:

  • 2.97 kg - size 3.5x75 mm.
  • 4.38 kg - size 4x40 mm.
  • 9 kg - size 5x50 mm.
  • 10 kg - size 5x75 mm.
  • 18.8 kg - size 6x65 mm.
  • 57 kg - size 3.5x75 mm.

The ring screw is made according to GOST 7031.

How to unscrew a screw with stripped edges

In a situation where, when screwing or unscrewing a screw, the edges have turned and it is no longer possible to turn it with a standard tool, if the head is not completely immersed and protrudes even slightly above the surface, then you can try to unscrew it using good pliers. To do this, you need to strongly compress the protruding part of the screw head with the jaws of a metalworking tool and slowly begin to unscrew the rod.

If the screw is screwed flush and “tight” into the surface, then it is not possible to remove it in a simple way without damaging it. Then you need to resort to a proven method and use a special device such as an extractor for unscrewing screws.

You can see the various ways to unscrew a screw with torn edges in the video:
