The grinder spindle rotates at a frequency of 11,000 rpm. In this case, the peripheral speed of the disk with a diameter of 125 mm. is more than 70 meters per second.
At this speed, hot particles of the material being processed fly out from under the disc of the grinder. In the event of an emergency destruction of the disk, its fragments will “shoot” at the same speed.
a brief description of
Safety glasses are an integral part of production processes, laboratory research, and are constantly used during construction work. They protect the face from splashes of hot metal, welding, droplets of aggressive liquid, infrared and ultraviolet radiation. In addition to glasses, there are also screens that look like a plate, rounded at the edges, with a head mount. There are a great variety of devices. They can have an elongated shape to protect the neck, and additionally be equipped with a plastic visor to hide the frontal part.
Impact-resistant materials are used in the manufacture of products: organic glass, polycarbonate and others. They are not afraid of chemical and mechanical damage, withstand significant temperature changes, providing one hundred percent visibility.
Some difficulties may arise when using personal protective equipment:
- field of view may be limited;
- Prolonged wear may cause discomfort;
- fogging of glass when working in hot shops.
The best manufacturers are trying to produce popular models taking into account the increased requirements for their operation and ease of use in any conditions.
In the production of face shields, modern high-tech equipment and high-quality and reliable materials are used that meet all safety requirements. A technology is used that makes it possible to use structures in any climate.
A distinctive feature of the product is its low weight to completely eliminate the load on the neck and head. The shield should not cause irritation or allergies during prolonged use. The best popular models have soft hypoallergenic pads for wearing comfort. Durable and high-quality fasteners do not put pressure on the head.
The screens are 100% transparent and completely eliminate optical distortion, which makes it possible to increase productivity, improve the quality of products, and avoid eye fatigue during long-term work. Some models provide the ability to wear additional protective equipment: respirators, headphones, and so on.

Protection standards and lens quality
Safety issues do not tolerate amateurism, so when choosing safety glasses you need to focus on certified products from reputable manufacturers. The higher the level of danger during work, the more carefully you need to familiarize yourself with the quality characteristics of the product.
Often the quality of glasses cannot be determined by inspection and fitting, since the problems of low-quality products only appear during use. Such one-time options not only lose transparency the first time they are used, but also pose health risks.
Guaranteeing ideal visibility while ensuring shockproof and filtering properties - leading specialists in the production of protective equipment continue to work on this task. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to ergonomic modern models.
What are there
There are many types of PPE. In order to avoid mistakes when choosing, you need to seriously understand this issue. Based on design features, the following types are distinguished:
Types | Description |
Open | Side and front eye protection. |
Closed | Reliably protected from all sides. Fits tightly to the face. Can be worn over prescription glasses. Devices are available with length-adjustable arms and a special-purpose shield. |
Sealed | Prevents liquids and gases from entering the eyes. |
Double | Models have double glass. They are distinguished by reliability and increased strength. |
What should you pay attention to when purchasing a product? On its properties. Available models:
- Metallized. Made of glass. Serve to protect against electromagnetic radiation. An integral attribute of workers at electrical installations.
- With a light filter. Able to filter light radiation in the visible spectrum. Not a single welder can do without them.
- Reinforced. Prevents the entry of solid particles. They are extremely popular among welders, masons, tilers, carpenters and representatives of other professions whose activities involve processing all kinds of materials.
- With a special coating that minimizes fogging and makes them impossible to scratch.
These properties can be combined, resulting in reliable products that prevent all kinds of threats. Devices are available that can protect both the eyes and the face at the same time. They are divided into the following types:
- opaque (protect from bright light, splashes of molten metal, sparks);
- transparent (do not impair visibility and prevent the penetration of solid particles).
Material of manufacture
Polycarbonate is considered to be the most durable. It is characterized by high heat resistance, shock resistance, and qualitatively protects the face from solid particles, metal splashes and short-term temperature increases of up to 100 degrees. They have such qualities as dielectricity and are used when working on electrical equipment. Completely transparent, does not create optical distortions.
Polystyrene has less transparency than polycarbonate. Ideal protection against splinters, hot splashes, solid particles, sparks. Used by professionals during repairs and construction work.
Shields are produced from non-flammable plastic. They are able to reduce the thermal impact rate several times. Heat-resistant shields help reduce thermal radiation. Mandatory attribute for welders. The devices are additionally equipped with a light filter. They are sometimes called welding glasses.
Structures made of organic glass are considered budget-friendly. They will protect against dust and solid particles. They are resistant to mechanical damage. Not afraid of chemical exposure.
Manufacturers produce products from metal mesh. Fine-mesh material is not able to prevent aggressive liquids or hot splashes from getting on your face, but it will completely protect your eyes from flying fragments and solid objects.
Mounting method
Models are available with two mounting methods:
- Nagolovnoe. It is equipped with a system of belts that hold the screen on a person’s head. There is a special device, thanks to which the shield is raised and lowered, as well as fixed in the required position.
- With helmet mount. Special adapters are provided to allow you to securely attach the product to your helmet. A lifting and fixing device is installed that lowers, raises and fixes the shield in the required state.
When to use
The scope of application of safety glasses is wide. They are included in the list of necessary means to ensure safety when performing work in the following industries:
- construction;
- Agriculture;
- manufacturing industry;
- auto repair work;
- woodworking;
- lighting technology;
- mechanical engineering;
- laboratories.
Glasses protect the organs of vision from foreign bodies, solid particles, and aggressive liquids entering them. The greatest danger comes from chemicals used in various industries. They are present in powders, aerosols, liquids, and gaseous compositions.
Options for using safety glasses
Type of work | What is the danger? |
cleaning wood or metal surfaces | small and hard particles |
spray paint | coloring pigment, organic-based liquid solvent |
use of chlorine | vaporous aggressive vapors, liquid particles |
welding work | molten solids |
turning and metalworking works | small solids (chips, dust) |
carpentry operations | wood shavings, dust |
use of chemicals | aggressive chemicals (can be in the form of steam, powder, liquid) |
Chemical burns are considered the most serious injuries. Alkaline compounds can cause vision loss due to the fact that they are almost impossible to wash out of the eye cavity with running water.
How to choose
Selection criteria vary depending on the area of use of the structure. Products may differ in functionality, design, viewing angle, average price, and manufacturer. There is no question of where to buy the products. You can visit specialized retail outlets, where a professional manager will introduce you to new products, tell you what they cost, and recommend which company is better to purchase the product.
You can order products online in the online store. It is advisable to first familiarize yourself with the ratings of quality products, look at reviews, and recommendations from experts. According to buyers, a good option is to receive goods from China using AliExpress. The only drawback of this purchasing method is that there is a high probability of receiving a defective product or a low-quality fake.
Which one is better to buy depends on many factors. But there are uniform requirements that apply to all personal protective equipment:
- Lenses must withstand an amplified impact of 1.2 J or a single impact with kinetic energy of 0.6 J.
- The weight of the product should not affect productivity.
- Completely harmless and safe for humans.
- Prevents fogging and scratches.
- Sit firmly on your head, do not dangle or fly off during sudden movements.
- Removal is easy and simple.
- The dimensions of the glass should in no way interfere with the view.
Glasses can be tinted and transparent, with indirect and direct ventilation, with or without additional functions, differ in appearance, color, and manufacturer. Direct ventilation is more popular, but such products are not able to protect against dust, and therefore do not guarantee the ability to safely plan, drill, process metal and wood.
How not to make a mistake with your choice
The choice of protective clothing is important because it is related to health. The first thing you need to consider when buying glasses or a screen is the specifics of the work. Protection must ensure the protection of a person from mechanical, chemical or thermal effects. Depending on the type of impact, the materials used differ.
The protective equipment may have a built-in fan. It is needed if there is a risk of glass fogging. Open glasses do not have fans, as there is natural ventilation.
Another important point is the material of manufacture. More often it is impact-resistant glass, plexiglass or polycarbonate. Individual elements can be made of silicone, plastic or metal.
Glasses and screens should not cause discomfort. An excellent option is a device with arms that can be adjusted and adjusted.
Tips for care and storage
All personal protective equipment has a limited service life. It is installed by the manufacturer and is indicated on the packaging. But in order for the structure to serve as high-quality protection over a long period, it must be properly cared for. It is worth considering that the product constantly interacts with high temperatures, solid particles, molten metal, chemicals, dust and gases. Due to the significant load, it can quickly fail.
The basic storage rules are as follows:
- Store in rooms specially designated for this purpose.
- Avoid direct sunlight.
- Prevent from mechanical damage.
- Avoid interaction with negative factors.
- Use special cases for storage.
- Regularly check for functionality and reliability.
- Visually inspect the screen for cracks, scratches, chips and other damage.
- Do not leave near heating devices.
- Do not clean with aggressive agents.
Security measures
An angle grinder poses an increased danger when processing any materials. Therefore, before starting work, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with safe techniques when handling such devices, as well as take some measures to eliminate the occurrence of health-threatening factors. In order to avoid injury from an angle grinder, you need to check the following conditions:
The cutting or grinding wheel must match the size of the tool and must not be chipped or cracked.- The protective cover must be secured in place.
- The cable must be undamaged.
- The start and lock buttons must work clearly.
- Protective clothing and gloves are required.
- Goggles or mask must be in good working order.
- The operator must be healthy, sober and trained in the necessary safety precautions.

Design features of safety glasses
You can divide all existing safety glasses into several groups. The distribution occurs according to the type of material, design features and coverage area.
By lens material
Several materials are used to create protective glasses lenses. The most common of them are:
- Mineral glass. It has been used since the days of the USSR. The main advantages of the material are its high light transmittance and resistance to light impacts (damage, chips, scratches). The main disadvantage is the fragility of the product and the possibility of injury from chips.
- Organic glass (plexiglass) and plastic. The ability to transmit light of these materials is lower than that of mineral glass, but they are much more flexible. This allows you to withstand fairly strong impacts, and in the event of breakdowns, fragments practically do not appear. But due to a large number of scratches on the surface, the material may become matte, which will make it unsuitable for use. Therefore, the service life of glasses made of organic glass and plastic is not so long. Also, these materials are easily destroyed when exposed to chemicals and at high temperatures (200 degrees).
- Silicone. This material is the most flexible of all listed. It can easily withstand even very powerful blows, but does not cope well with minor damage. Silicone also quickly deteriorates when exposed to high temperatures (sometimes it can withstand up to 300 degrees, but most often it begins to lose its properties at 200). The surface becomes cloudy over time, so the service life is also quite short.
Some expensive models use combination lenses. In them, several materials alternate in layers.
By way of putting on
There are also differences in how glasses are attached to a person’s head. You can put them on yourself in one of two ways:
- Classic with temples. When purchasing this model, the first thing to look at is the possibility of adjusting the arms. It is also necessary to take into account that during active work the glasses may fall or simply move out of place. This can create dangerous situations while performing tasks.
- Sports. Such models are attached with a wide elastic band that goes around the head.
Some modern glasses provide two methods of fastening at the same time. If a special mask is provided for the work, then the fastenings can be supplemented with a small braid passing through the middle of the head.
According to the size of the protected face surface
There is no official classification of glasses on this basis. But they can be divided into several groups conditionally:
- Only the eyes themselves with a small space around them are protected;
- glasses overlap the eyes with part of the adjacent side of the face;
- The entire face is covered with a mask or shield.
There are a huge number of models on sale now. They can either limit or increase the area of protection of the nose, bridge of the nose and other parts of the face.
By size of review
There are also several subtypes of glasses with different viewing angles. They can significantly reduce or expand the operator’s angle of view:
- Additional lenses. These details are located on the temples of a person; they act as an addition to the central part of the lens of the glasses. With their help, it is easy to see objects with “lateral vision”.
- Curved shape. These models do not have additional transparent elements, but thanks to their semicircular shape they are able to expand the viewing angle to the sides.
- Cuts in the arms. These parts are slots in the side. They slightly expand the view, but do not prevent additional dust and foreign objects from entering the eyes.
- Wide transparent temples or frames. This subtype is made entirely of one material. If they are made with a frame, then the eyes receive additional protection from debris from all sides.
- Front view only. This type is equipped with the most modest visibility. It protects the eyes from all sides, but reduces the ability to see from the side.
Safety glasses for working with an angle grinder are divided into several groups. For example, they differ in the color of the lenses, the ability and method of ventilation (to reduce fogging), and tightness. For people with poor vision, it is allowed to use their medical model for protection. In such a situation, remember that models with diopters are not equipped with additional side protection. They cost much more, but are not resistant to damage. Because of this, if you have poor vision, it is recommended to use safety glasses along with lenses, or wear a medical model underneath them.
How medical devices work
Medical safety glasses are devices that are designed to protect the eyes from particulate matter, chemicals, or harmful radiation during medical procedures.
They found the greatest applicability among surgeons and dentists.
During surgery or treatment, glasses protect against:
- splashes of biological fluids, used medications, chemical compounds;
- flying fragments;
- dust and harmful cleaning compounds and their fumes during the treatment of premises.
Medical protective devices with light filters are used when processing metal, ceramics or plastic in the manufacture of dental crowns or prostheses, in the case of laser procedures.
During manufacturing, medical glasses are immersed in a special composition that reliably protects the inner surface of the glass from fogging. Models of medical glasses are smaller in size and lighter in shape.
They are divided by type into closed and open in the form of a mask. Helioprotective glasses are also available. They have a light filter that does not allow the blue part of the light spectrum to pass through. The glasses of these glasses are made in orange or brown.
Thanks to their universal shape, medical glasses can be worn over regular glasses to correct vision. This combination does not cause discomfort.

Ease of use
Most consumers, when choosing glasses, forget about the comfort of fit and choose only for safety. Reasons such as: poor visibility, uncomfortable fit, glasses rubbing the bridge of the nose, and so on.
To solve such problems, special options are added to the glasses:
Temples. Needed for attaching glasses behind the ears. The material must be soft and at the same time durable in order to firmly fix the glasses on the head.
Lenses and LEDs. Lenses should not collect condensation, should not be scratched and be transparent. Also, the shape of the glasses should allow you to replace the lenses with newer ones. For example, if you need to change lenses to darker ones due to working in a lighted room, then the glasses should include this function.
Eye hazard
Flying sparks, metal and stone filings, due to their low mass, have insignificant kinetic energy, but sufficient to harm the health of a careless operator. A large piece of an exploding cutting wheel, in accordance with the law of physics “mass times the square of the velocity divided in half,” can have a kinetic reserve comparable to the muzzle energy of a small caliber weapon

A properly installed guard directs the flow of sparks and microparticles away from the operator, instilling a sense of safety, but obstructing visibility and hiding cut marks. Any careful attempt to look behind the casing, any ricocheting fragment - and...
….and the most unpleasant consequences if you are not wearing safety glasses.
Types of lens coatings
All safety glasses must have multiple or single coatings to provide high levels of protection. For example, these are reinforcing films; they increase mechanical resistance. In the event that the lenses break, such a film holds the fragments, protecting the eyes from their contact.
Lenses have other coatings:
- Hydrophobic
- Colored
- Antistatic
- Photochromic
- Enlightening
The antireflective film reduces the reflection of light, they do not create glare as much. These films are used in military and sports glasses. The absence of glare reduces the likelihood of blinding others and reduces visibility.
- The hydrophobic coating prevents dirt from sticking to the lenses, the glass will be transparent regardless of the circumstances.
- The closed type especially needs a film of this type, because the hydrophobicity of the surface prevents fogging of the glass.
- Closed glasses are more susceptible to lack of sufficient ventilation due to the difference in body temperature and the environment.
- The film is especially needed in glasses intended for chemical work.
Colored lenses darken the lenses so they don't let in too much sunlight, which is necessary for outdoor work. The film can be black or brown, or green.
The antistatic coating prevents dust from getting on the lenses, which is very important in sports and military glasses, because during combat it is impossible to wipe your glasses. The film is placed on top; if this is not done, it will not work.
Photochromic films change transparency depending on the lighting, which is convenient. In the morning they look transparent, and in the afternoon they darken.
