Many summer residents install fences around their plots using barbed wire. They believe that such a “fence” is the cheapest, easiest and fastest way to ensure the safety of the territory and the safety of property.
According to SNIP 30-02-97 “Planning and development of territories of gardening (dacha) associations of citizens, buildings and structures,” the fencing material can be any - metal, lattice structures, forged metal, cast iron or welded steel. There are no legal restrictions on the use of barbed wire. However, it is better for the owner of the site to stretch it not along the outer perimeter of the site, but from the inside of the fence, since this type of fencing can harm the health of passers-by. If someone accidentally gets caught on the wire, the owner of the site will be required to pay compensation for the cuts.
Q&A Can a fence on a property be taxed?
Be careful, current!
Of course, a high and durable fence will protect your property from intrusive prying eyes. But you can’t just pick up and install a two-meter fence. There are certain standards that you will have to follow. According to clause 24 of the Model Rules, fences no more than 1.7 m high with a translucency of at least 50% over the entire height can be installed on the boundaries separating adjacent garden plots. However, the following clause should be taken into account: “unless otherwise established in writing by agreement with the owners, owners and tenants of adjacent land plots.”
If desired, you can string it over the fence and barbed wire. This is not prohibited by law. Of course, how to protect your property is a private matter for the citizen, but it is worth considering that barbed wire can injure not only intruders, but also your children. There is no official prohibition on conducting electric current along a fence enclosing one’s own plot of land. But if someone gets hurt, they will have to answer to the fullest extent of the law. Here you can fall under the Criminal or Administrative Code, depending on the consequences.

Stop, I'll shoot!
Often, summer residents keep weapons at home - “just in case.” But even here citizens need to know some important points.
Firstly, hunting weapons must be stored at the place of registration. That is, if you live in the capital and spend the summer at the dacha, it is forbidden to take a gun there with you. This is a violation of possession of a firearm, and you will be subject to administrative liability, even to the extent that your permit to possess the weapon may be revoked.
As for the pneumatic one, it can be stored at the dacha, but certain requirements are also imposed on it. Pneumatic weapons are divided into types depending on the muzzle energy: sports - from 3 J to 25 J, hunting - 7.5 J - 25 J, as well as a product similar in design to a pneumatic weapon with energy up to 3 J. And even simple pistols with energy up to 3 J can be dangerous. Shooting at someone else's property, and even more so at people and animals, can be classified as hooliganism, exceeding self-defense measures, causing bodily harm, which will ultimately lead to the imposition of responsibility for the act.
No lynching
There are many cases when summer residents themselves detain uninvited guests caught in the act. But the main thing here is not to overdo it. It is important here that the force used during arrest is proportionate to the unlawful act.
If a thief comes at you with a knife, then any measures to detain you can be used, even to the point of taking a shovel and fighting off with it.

If a hooligan climbs into a greenhouse and steals tomatoes, and the owner points a gun at him, then this is already criminal liability for the latter.
It is important to note: you can detain the thief only until law enforcement agencies arrive. You have no right to detain anyone just like that. The police can come, record the data and release the person - you have no right to stop him. And it will be up to the investigation and trial to decide who is guilty and who is not.
Be aware of dogs!
Another way to take care of the safety of your loved ones if you live in a private house is a formidable dog that will scare away hooligans and thieves. Everyone knows: intruders are instantly sobered up by furious barking and a sign: “There is an angry dog in the yard.” But there are nuances here too. Of course, if in your absence the dog (provided that the animal is vaccinated and registered at the place of residence) moves freely around the site and bites an uninvited guest, the law will be on your side. If, when you see a thief, you command the dog “Fast!”, then in this case you will have to answer to the law.
"Alarm button"
Fighting for your good is more beneficial for life and health using legal methods. And, as experts advise, the most reliable way to secure dacha property today remains the installation of a security alarm. If there is no technical possibility, you may be offered to set the security alarm without a visit from the Security Department team. If an alarm goes off at such a property, special equipment can show whether a criminal has entered the house. The operational duty service, having reported this to any territorial internal affairs agency, can send a squad to the facility where the alarm went off.
Design Features
The “thorn” is a special wire equipped with spikes along its entire length. It was invented in 1872 in France, but became famous thanks to the American farmer Henry Rose. He made a fence from boards with pieces of “thorn.” This wire fence interested farmers and they began to use similar fences for animal pens, trying to improve their design. The first company to produce barbed fencing, LL Ellwood Manufacturing, sold 270 tons of this product in 1875.
Note: soon the majority of farmers switched to a new type of fence, since it had high protective qualities and low cost.
Today “thorn” is used for fencing:
- private territory;
- construction sites;
- strategic objects (military);
- industrial and warehouse enterprises;
- sports (volleyball, football, tennis), children's playgrounds;
- areas for walking and training dogs;
- security facilities (prisons);
- pastures.

Barbed wire fencing has the following advantages:
- high degree of protection;
- ease and simplicity of construction;
- affordable price. Prices for components of the structure are significantly lower than those of other protective fences.
Metal facade mesh for fence: general information
Plastic facade mesh is cheap and easy to use. But its mechanical strength does not satisfy everyone. Metal mesh is much stronger.
Characteristics and features by type
Existing metal meshes are classified by type
- galvanized welded mesh in rolls;
- masonry welded mesh or reinforced belt;
- woven mesh, popular name is chain-link mesh;
- articulated mesh;
- channeled mesh;
- woven mesh.
The mesh is made on special machines either by resistance welding or weaving. The starting material is steel wire, which can be galvanized, black, alloyed or coated with PVC plastic. The main technical and consumer indicator characterizing the mesh is the cell area. Cell sizes range from 5×5 mm² to 200×200 mm². The weight of the roll depends on the size of the cell, the thickness of the wire, and the length and width of the tape rolled into a roll.
Rabitz
The most popular mesh among summer residents is a woven mesh. It is believed that it was named after its inventor, Karl Rabitz. Its structure is formed by intertwining wires. To protect against corrosion, low-carbon steel is galvanized. In areas with a maritime climate, polymer-coated wire is used.
Chain-link mesh is widely used in the construction industry - for screeding floors, for strengthening plaster, for strengthening the insulation of pipelines. In road construction, it is used to filter bulk materials.

Welded grating
Welded mesh is produced by contact welding of two perpendicularly located wires. Structures made on the basis of welded mesh are more rigid compared to analogues made from chain-link mesh. To protect against corrosion, the wire is either galvanized or coated with a polyvinyl chloride sheath. In the latter case, the mesh takes on a more aesthetic appearance.
Pros and cons of metal fencing
The main advantage of metal fences is their reliability and durability. In this case, we mean functional reliability, that is, reliable protection against unwanted intrusions. The fence assembly technology is simple. The downside is the increased cost of the finished fence. Moreover, there is the need to protect it from corrosion in the open air.
Installation of metal mesh
It is not wise to make a temporary fence out of metal mesh; you need to build it thoroughly right away. The pillars should be steel pipes with a diameter of at least 10 cm. The pillar should be buried 1 m into the ground and filled with concrete. It is also possible to use special concrete columns. Wire is stretched across the tops of the pillars. The mesh roll is unwound, and the upper edge along the entire length is attached to the wire. For strength, you can stretch it along the lower edge of the mesh.
Brackets for fastening the wire are installed on the top of the post. If the fence structure is sectional, then sections are mounted on brackets. Their fastening can be welded (non-dismountable) or bolted (dismountable). This is at the discretion of the site owner.

Types of studded fence
To make a thorny fence the following is used:
- galvanized wire with sharp spikes along its entire length. According to Gosstandart, its thickness is 2.8 mm. This is the simplest protective structure intended for domestic use - for example, for constructing a barbed wire fence at a dacha or farm;
- reinforced steel strip belt equipped with sharp blades. It can be straight (AKL) or twisted (ASKL), and is used at both private and public industrial facilities.
Please note: the second type of “thorn” is more reliable, since such an obstacle is difficult to remove even with the help of special tools.
Reinforced razor tape can be presented in the form of:
- flat tape;
- grids with diamond-shaped cells;
- volumetric spirals of different diameters (Bruno spiral);
- spikes attached to the finished fence.
Domestic enterprises produce various types of “thorns,” but the most recognizable and widespread on the market are products of the Egoza and Gyurza brands.
A fence with barbed wire can be presented as:
- pillars with a “thorn” stretched between them;
- an ordinary fence on top of which a protective structure is installed. For example, there is a type of gitter mesh equipped with L- or Y-shaped brackets for attaching barbed wire to them.
Installation of fence posts
There are different methods for installing a fence to a corrugated pipe. But, one way or another, this is an important stage - marking the site and attaching the chain-link mesh to the support.

Selection of section and dimensions
Before attaching the chain-link mesh to the posts, you need to clearly measure the fence being built, taking into account the documentation, and calculate the location of the gate and wicket. The area for fence construction must be cleared of debris.
Next, you should drive wedges of wood or reinforcement in place of the corner posts. To find out the location of the intermediate supports, you need to stretch a strong rope or cable between the wedges, and then measure the distance.
Fastening schemes
It is best to install corrugated pipe supports every 2 meters. That is, the resulting length of the fence will need to be divided by 2, rounding up. This method allows you to determine the total number of pillars.
Areas of future racks also need to be marked with stakes. Taking into account the type of land, the thickness of the corrugated pipe and the type of fencing, several methods of installing poles are chosen.
Sketch of fixation with a cable
Board support is short-lived; concrete fence posts can create difficulties when attaching the chain-link. The solution is a round or rectangular pipe with a cross-section of 50x50 or 60x60 mm.
The photo shows metal poles made from corrugated pipe.

Installation of pillars
Installation of a professional pipe for a fence is carried out in the following ways:
- partially or completely fill with concrete in pre-dug holes;
- forget - install it in a hole and fill it with stones;
- drive into the ground.
Installation diagram for a metal fence post
This takes into account the type of soil, groundwater level and soil freezing. But for the installation of a chain-link, the probable movements of the racks of a couple of centimeters are insignificant in length and width.
In practice, the rule is that at least 30% of the corrugated pipe must be buried in the pit. Thus, poles made of corrugated pipes of 2.5 meters must be buried at 80 cm for any installation option.

Installation of barbed fencing on a regular fence
The easiest way to secure your site is by installing barbed wire on top of the finished fence. The shape and method of installation is determined by the characteristics of the barrier. Most often, special brackets are attached to the supports, which will hold the “thorn”.
To install a protective device on a fence with your own hands you will need:
- spiked wire;
- brackets;
- welding machine, electrodes;
- metal staples, pliers;
- steel string.

How to make a protective layer over a finished fence? To do this, you need to weld a bracket to each post. The tape is stretched to the required state and secured to the welded elements using metal brackets.
How to attach the “thorn” so that it does not sag over time? To do this, a string is threaded inside the wire rings, pulling it between the brackets. It should pass at a height of 30-50 mm from the top edge of the fence. The string is secured with staples, pulling until it stops. Then the spiral studded tape is distributed around the string, finally forming its density.
Attention: installation of the protective fence should be carried out wearing special gloves and thick clothing.
Painting after installing a fence in the garden
For each material used in a building, the most suitable coloring agent must be used.
There are a lot of types of paints and varnishes, so we will consider only the most popular ones that are suitable for the previously described fence materials.
After installation, painting the fence yourself is done using a brush, spray gun or paint roller. It is not difficult to paint a wrought-iron fence, which cannot be said about a chain-link fence, and the smaller its cells, the more difficult it will be to paint them. It is best to paint a mesh fence with a brush. A paint roller is suitable for painting solid surfaces - for example, metal sheets, solid sections or a solid wooden fence. A spray bottle is also not suitable for painting through-through structures, since most of the paint will be wasted. This device is suitable for painting large parts or a solid fence.
Wooden fences are most susceptible to rot and mold, so they need constant careful maintenance. To protect them, coating and glazing antiseptics are used, as well as acrylate and oil paint.
Antiseptics penetrate deep into the wood and help protect it from destructive external influences.
Opaque covering materials allow you to completely hide the wood texture, preserving only its relief.
Oil paint penetrates deeply into the wood and serves as reliable protection from atmospheric agents, but it dries slowly and fades over time. Service life - 5-7 years.
Watch a video of painting a wooden fence built with your own hands:
Acrylate paint protects wood well from dampness and mold, retains its shine and color longer than oil paint. In addition, it is vapor permeable, i.e. it allows the wood to breathe and has a pleasant elasticity. Service life - 7-9 years.
Before painting, the surface of metal and slate must be cleaned with sandpaper, removing roughness, rust or old peeling paint.
To paint metal structures, first of all, paint that can protect the surface from corrosion should be used. There is a whole range of anti-corrosion paints and enamels that help preserve metal structures. Even if rust appears on the metal, it can be dealt with by using a special “transformer” paint designed to cover the corroded areas.
Galvanized and aluminum fences are usually painted with dispersion paint. The service life of this coating is 5 years.
Slate fences are considered the lowest cost. They are often installed for temporary fencing of an area, although after painting such fences take on a more aesthetic appearance and look quite decent. There is a special paint for slate, both foreign and domestic, that protects it from the appearance of moss and lichen. You can apply paint to the surface with a regular brush, spray gun or roller. Its service life is 8 years.
How to paint a slate or metal fence after installation with your own hands is demonstrated in this video:
Installation of a solid studded fence
To build a solid wire fence with your own hands, you need to correctly install the metal supports. Holes with a depth of 0.6-0.8 m are dug under them at a distance of 2.5 m. Fence posts are installed by driving into the ground or concreting.
Recommendation: to ensure that the outer supports do not deform over time under the influence of tension, they are equipped with supports on the side of the fence.
How to stretch a spiked mesh between posts? To do this, metal eyes are welded along the entire height of the supports with a certain pitch, which will be its clamps. The optimal distance between them is 10-20 cm. Then they stretch the “thorn”, forming horizontal rows from it. It is attached to the eyes on the poles using staples. The web is compacted by fixing the tape crosswise.
You can enhance the protective functions of a studded fence by making the structure energized. To do this, current is supplied to the fence using a battery. A long wire is run along the entire perimeter of the structure, which connects one terminal to another. The mains voltage should be checked periodically.
Important: there must be a sign on the energized fence with the appropriate notice.
Attaching barbed wire allows you to protect the area from the penetration of strangers and wild animals, and ensure the safety of property. The method of execution of such a fence and the degree of its reliability are determined by specific conditions and the desired effect.

Installation options
There are several types of installation options. Let's take a closer look.
Along the fence
Barbed wire can be strung over existing fencing structures without any problems. There should be no difficulties when installing it at the level of the existing fence, in addition to it. This is the solution most often used when it is necessary to provide reliable cover for private homes. But wire barriers are also rolled out over fences near industrial facilities, warehouses, ports, television centers, military facilities, and so on.
To install a barbed barrier with your own hands, you need to use a variety of fasteners and steel brackets. The choice of connection means depends on the specifics of the fence. So, if support pillars are used, most often the supporting elements are welded or screwed with self-tapping screws. Straight brackets allow you to secure wire in several rows and install spiral barriers. They can be replaced with the upper parts of support pillars. The main thing is that they rise above the fence.
Using brackets in the shape of the letter L, you can install several strips of razor tape at once. The working element with the wire stretched over it is fastened with an inclination inward or outward. The L-shaped support block also allows you to hang voluminous ribbons in a spiral shape. A volumetric spiral and rows are also mounted on a Y-shaped bracket. The difference between them is only in the ease of use of the specific form of the product. With semicircular brackets, everything is no more complicated: they are placed straight or at a certain angle, mainly for the purpose of creating spiral reinforcements.
When the brackets are installed, the wire itself is mounted between them, used as a support. If this is not done, the main protective barrier will inevitably sag
Important: the broach is pulled tighter using winches and other mechanisms. It is very difficult to correctly tension this element by hand and it is not always possible at all.
The number of strips of installed wire (1-3) is determined by the diameter of the spirals.
Further:
- stretch the SBB (as carefully as possible, making sure that there are the required number of turns per 1 meter);
- attach the wire itself;
- check the result visually and by tension level.
On the ground
When arranging ground fencing, it is better to fasten spirals of large diameter, and in 2 or 3 rows. It is believed that the safest barrier is when the skeins are laid out like a pyramid. The initial stage of work is no different from installing a simple fence. First of all, pillars are placed with a step between installation points of 2.5 to 3 m (it is not recommended to deviate from this range of values). Many experts consider ordinary metal pipes to be ideal support pillars.
The cross-section of the pipes used is not very important. You can take the smallest pipe. The wire is pulled taking into account the selected method of installing the obstacle. When this is done, the Egoza is mounted on the original wire. It is recommended to secure it with staples.
How to make a fence?
Building a fence entirely out of barbed wire is a perfectly reasonable option for those who want maximum security. This solution is sometimes used by cottage owners where there is something to steal. However, it is found much more often in warehouses, industry and agriculture. In any case, a solid wire fence will definitely require the use of posts. They are made from different materials, mainly metal or durable wood.
Even the best rocks, thoroughly protected by chemical compounds, cannot boast of resistance to precipitation. Metal is better in this regard, however, it is necessary to select high-grade stainless steel. You have to decide for yourself whether to make a flat or three-dimensional fence. You will have to work as carefully as possible, because barbed wire sometimes provokes serious injuries.
Please note: in some cases, the pillars are made of concrete. Regardless of the specific material, it is advisable to concrete the supporting structures. It's much more durable. The diameter of the wellhead for concreting should be 0.15-0.2 m greater than the cross-section of the support. A pole is hammered into this place and then filled with concrete with the necessary fillers.
