How to create a monogram online for free
A monogram (translated as “one letter”) is a graphic sign that includes several letters intertwined.
Usually two symbols are used, but three can also be found. As a rule, a monogram consists of the initial letters of the company name or the name of its owner. It is placed mainly on the logo (such logos are also called monograms). Create your logo online

What is a monogram?
A monogram is a shape created by combining several letters. A separate symbol, like initials, is not a monogram. Two or more letters (graphemes) must be joined together to form a single graphic character.
The Tesla, Figma and Pinterest logos are not monograms, but individual letters.
BBC and NPR are not monograms, but CNN can be considered one since the letters “N” share a common vertical stroke.
The LA Dodgers logo is a prime example of a monogram, as the bottom stroke of the “L” forms the crossbar of the “A.” Similarly, in the Under Armor logo, the crossbar “A” is formed by the intersection of the letter “U”.

In what cases are monograms most effective?
Monograms are pleasant to look at: the brain unravels them and tries to recognize each letter. The moment of insight brings us sincere joy - and this is precisely the purpose of any form of graphic communication, the viewer seems to “get the joke” of the designer.
Initials or another type of abbreviation are what you need if you want to create a logo for a company with a very long name. For example, shortening the overcomplicated phrase “London Symphony Orchestra” to “LSO” seems logical. The best thing about the famous monogram is that it resembles a conductor waving his baton.

Every successful design project starts with a clear brief. Both the designer and the client need to understand what their goals are in order to enjoy the process and get great results.
Ask the client the following questions and record the answers in the brief:
- What does the company do?
- Who is your audience?
- Does the brand have a logo or other visual materials?
- Where will the monogram be used?
- How would you describe the brand?
- What feelings do you want to evoke in consumers?

Deciding which letters to include in the monogram
It's not as easy as it might seem! Long names can be shortened to initials, but you don't have to use every single one.
For example, if you are dealing with the name “Sarah James and Richard Jones' Classic Car Repairs and Servicing”, “SJRJCCRS” is not the best option! The name “J&J Classics” is easier to pronounce, and the “JJ” monogram would be the perfect complement.
Alternatively, you can take a different approach. For example, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing became known as 3M. Be creative!
Making sketches
The main source of ideas is not the computer, but your imagination. No matter how tempting it may be to immediately open your favorite graphics editor, always start with sketches on paper.
Don’t get carried away with research, endlessly leafing through the works of other designers. You are faced with a clear task - to correctly combine the letters. So sharpen your pencil and draw.
I always start with small rough sketches and then refine them. Set a timer and simply draw letters, trying to create as many variations as possible. Then think about how to combine them into a single form.

When you have enough options on paper, analyze which ones can be improved and turned into a solution that meets the brief. Then create a larger, more detailed version of your chosen sketch and scan or photograph it to convert the sketch into digital form.
We develop the design
Import the best sketch into a graphics editor to create a vector version. The logo is always a vector image because it needs to be scaled without losing quality.
Sketching is not the only method for finding ideas. Software is also suitable for this task.
Test fonts with brand-appropriate characteristics. Try combining letters in different ways - overlapping, intertwining, connecting, reflecting. Remove parts of letters, but make sure they remain recognizable. Save the result of each iteration on the artboard.
Try again and again! In this case, you need to think about what other options are available.
If you're using a ready-made font, customize the letters to make your monogram unique. Another method is to create your own letters using the Pen tool or using a combination of geometric shapes. You can also add strokes or decorative details to make your logo unique and balanced.

Choosing colors
You should start by creating a monochrome version of the logo, and then add colors. This approach ensures that your design will work equally well in different situations.
Invert the image and see what the white version will look like against a black background. In this case, the negative space usually appears smaller, so make sure it is large enough to remain visible at any size and maintain proportions. Make the logo smaller and check! Perhaps the design needs some improvement.
Check how the logo will look if you apply your corporate colors to it, or choose other shades.
Sometimes a full inverse version is created to minimize the optical differences that occur when a light logo is placed on a dark background. This is usually not necessary, but keep this decision in mind.
If the brand already has signature colors, make sure the monogram looks good in that color. Otherwise, choose a suitable color and create your own palette to showcase the design.

Testing the design
It is important to test whether the design works in the real world. Test the monogram in different conditions. Mockups will help you visualize the finished product and present the design at its best.
How to evaluate a created monogram
The designer and client can evaluate the result according to a number of criteria. Answer the following questions.

- Is the monogram legible? People should easily understand what letters it consists of.
- Is it right for the company? Is it relevant to the industry and reflects the brand's personality?
- Is it simple enough? The main purpose of a monogram is identification. Keep the design simple. Simple logos are more likely to become iconic and perform better in different contexts.

- Is it original enough? Never copy the work of other designers. If you used an existing font, change it at least a little to make the design unique.

Symbols of resistance in wartime

A striking example of a royal monogram is the monogram of King Haakon VII of Norway. While in exile during World War II, Haakon VII led the Norwegian resistance to the German occupation, and H7 became a symbol used by the Norwegian population to signify solidarity and loyalty to the king, as well as commitment to the Norwegian resistance movement. The act of drawing or creating the H7 symbol was punishable by imprisonment in German-occupied Norway.[10]
Similarly, in Poland during the war, the monogram "PW" was used as a symbol of resistance, known as the "Anchor" (Polish: Kotwica), due to its distinctive shape. Its meaning varied, as the initials were used for various slogans such as "Poland Fights", "Warsaw Uprising", "Polish Army" and others. As in the Norwegian example above, its use was punished by the Nazi occupation authorities.

Monogram Vs Cipher
Initials should overlap or touch each other in order to be considered a monogram. When they do not make contact, the motif is called a cipher. Many of the motifs on this site are ciphers and not monograms.
If you have chosen a design in which the letters do not interlace and you want them to interlace, then you can easily move them closer together so they do make contact or overlap. Open the monogram maker and drag the letters closer together. You are free to move them around until you are happy with the placement. Which letters should be used to create your monogram?
For one person : you can use the first name initial or last name initial. Using the last name initial is more common but some people, particularly children or young adults, prefer to use their first name initial.
For a couple or family : the common last name initial.
For one person : some people use a two letter monogram for their first and last name if they don't have a middle name or do not want to include it.
For a couple: two letter monograms are often used by married couples or prior to a couple's wedding with the first initial of each partner on either side. Usually, the woman's initial is first. When a couple has different last names, then a two-letter monogram can be used with each partner's last name initial on either side.
For one person (when the middle initial is either larger or emphasized in another manner) : the initial of the person's last name should be in the middle. The first initial appears to the left and the middle initial to the right. Traditionally, the middle letter is larger or emphasized.
For one person (when all three initials are equal) : the first initial appears to the left, the middle initial in the middle, and the initial of the last name should be to the right.
For a couple: the initial of their surname should be in the middle and the woman's initial on one end and the man's initial on the other end. Most couples prefer to put the woman's initial first (ie to the left) but others prefer the more traditional approach where the man's initial is first.
