ARGON-ARC WELDING OF CAST WHEELS IN ZHULEBINO – MOSCOW

Argon welding of wheels
of any complexity and other aluminum parts at affordable prices is one of the most important services of our tire fitting.
At the same time, the strength of the material at the welding site does not differ from its original state. We carry out the following types of work on argon-arc welding:

  • Welding cracks in cast wheels of any complexity (argon welding);
  • Restoration of missing parts of the alloy wheel;
  • Argon welding of cracks in aluminum parts and stainless steel parts.

The procedure for carrying out repair work

The argon arc method of welding damaged disks involves the following procedure for carrying out restoration work:

  • preparing surfaces for welding (removing dyes and other protective coatings);
  • grinding or chamfering along cracks, simplifying the restoration process;
  • selection of the required filler material for argon welding of disks;
  • welding a crack (welding a chip) in an argon environment;
  • grinding weld spots and treating with protective compounds.

It is most convenient to prepare a product for repair using a hand milling cutter (milling cutter) or grinder with a working disk no more than a millimeter thick.
With their help, longitudinal cracks are cut through, and transverse cracks are expanded to the required size. When preparing the filler material, the nature of the damage is taken into account. So, if the disk bursts, this means that there is a lot of silicon in the source material. In this case, choose wire with a high content of this chemical element.

To correctly select the required type of filler material, please refer to the table

It indicates the rod numbers and characteristics, taking into account the specifics of their application.

The argon welding process itself begins with the deposition of the missing part of the material. Moreover, in this mode the current is usually set to be small (about 120-140 Amperes).

For significant amounts of damage that require metal surfacing, it is better to use the pulse mode.

The build-up of the deposited part is carried out layer by layer with a slight overlap on both sides (excess will be removed during grinding). Welding of the crack begins from the inside, fusing metal in such a way that the resulting seam overlaps it on each side with a margin. Cracks on the outer part of the product are dealt with in exactly the same way.

At the end of the welding operations, labor-intensive work is required to clean and polish the restored surfaces, including cleaning the edges of excess metal and leveling both planes for the tire.

During the cleaning process, areas with insufficient deposited material may be discovered. After identifying them, it will be necessary to re-surfacing and then start processing again.

Argon welding of alloy wheels in Zhulebino - Moscow When is welding of alloy wheels needed?

Wear of car wheels and accessories is an irreversible process. This is facilitated by the poor quality of roads, and more specifically the presence of a large number of potholes. When wheels hit potholes, your vehicle's rims are subject to serious stress. When falling into holes, the wheels are deformed from impacts, and cracks appear on the surface of the discs. Even alloy wheels can stand the test of time and our roads. And in addition to this, defects appear on the surface of the disks. But if the damage was minor, the discs can still be restored using argon welding. One of the most common methods for restoring disks is argon welding of disks. This method of disc repair most effectively restores damaged areas and guarantees durability in areas where metal is argon welded. Car alloy wheels are used in conditions far from those specified in the instructions. So the fact that such a strong structure cannot withstand loads and breaks over time is a secret to no one. There are two types of disc damage: chips and cracks. Our car service technicians can easily solve these problems using argon welding. Argon welding of discs in Moscow is carried out by us using special equipment and modern technologies.

Types of damage

If you compare different types of disks, you will notice that forged disks are characterized by high fragility, while cast and stamped ones bend easily. Depending on this, various methods of their restoration are required.

Welding of discs becomes necessary in case of the following damage:

  • chips;
  • rim curvature;
  • offset relative to the axis;
  • missing some parts;
  • faults;
  • cracks;
  • scratches;
  • bullies;
  • surface damage.

These damages can be corrected, with the exception of cracks on the hub, as well as critical deviations from the geometry. To correct damage, welding of disks with argon is used. It is especially advisable to use this method when cracks and chips form. Straightening of cast wheels by welding is carried out using this method.

Where to weld alloy wheels in Zhulebino

    Our tire service is located in the Zhulebino districts and also serves the Kotelniki, Lyubertsy, Vykhino, Kosino, Nekrasovka districts. We provide various tire fitting and argon wheel welding services. Our specialists perform the following work on repairing disks using argon welding:
  • Repairing cracks.
  • Connection of individual parts of the disk.
  • Surfacing of missing disk elements.
  • Disc alignment.

A special feature of wheel restoration using argon welding is the possibility of using a material whose composition will exactly match the composition of the product (this can be found out by looking at the wheel markings).

general information

As we wrote above, alloy wheels are very popular. Manufacturers offer many shapes and colors of discs. Such discs do not need hubcaps like stamped ones, and they have no visual defects. Any expensive car cannot be sold without alloy wheels.

Modern wheels are made from an alloy of aluminum and magnesium. Previously, the wheels were entirely aluminum, but over time it became clear that the quality of aluminum wheels is imperfect. They were not resistant to increased mechanical loads and quickly deformed, especially off-road. Therefore, magnesium was added to aluminum to keep the disc lightweight while improving its performance.

Often no more than 10-15% magnesium is added to the composition. In this case, you need to make sure that the metal grade is indicated on the disk. Knowing the brand, you can easily adjust the welding mode, select the necessary electrodes and other consumables. It is very important. All repairs must be made with consumables that are made of the same metal as the disk itself. If this is neglected, the seam will turn out to be of poor quality and will quickly collapse.

Advantages and features of argon arc welding

    The main advantages of argon arc welding are:
  • There is no need to completely replace the disk with a new one due to a crack or chip. The chip can be corrected by argon welding of the cast disk
  • When welding with argon, the disk is not damaged and remains as strong as before
  • The use of argon welding allows you to reliably connect thin metal parts in hard-to-reach places.
    Repair of disks by argon welding consists of the following stages:
  • Determination of the specific brand of alloy from which the disc is made. To do this, consider the brand and other markings applied by the manufacturer to the damaged wheel;
  • Selection of electrodes. The material of the electrodes must match the material of the discs as closely as possible;
  • Preparation of the damaged area consists of several stages. First of all, the craftsmen clean the disc from dirt and paint;
  • The cracks in the disk widen slightly to improve filling with molten metal;
  • For chips, if the broken fragment is lost, welders select a suitable size piece of another disk from the same alloy;
  • The welding site warms up. Here it is important to keep the temperature within a given range in order to obtain a high-quality seam and not spoil the material by overheating. Our service station technicians know the operating temperatures for all types of alloys, and also use reference materials;
  • Filler wire is fed into the crack. It melts and fills the damage cavity;
  • At the chip site, the patch is stuck in several places and then scalded around the perimeter;
  • Chips on the edge are filled with surfacing - layer by layer, the recess is filled with molten filler wire until the recess is eliminated.

Our advantages:

  • We use only the latest equipment and tools.

The cost of minimal work on argon welding (crack on a disk up to 5 cm): 1000 rubles, over 1 cm: 200 rubles. Contact our Low Profile auto service center and any damage to alloy or stamped wheels will be promptly repaired. Using effective argon arc welding, we will restore the disc's shape, balance and strength.

Argon welding technology

Argon welding technology has practically nothing in common with such a device as a soldering iron. The main element of the torch is a tungsten electrode. Let us explain: tungsten is an extremely refractory metal. Its melting begins at 3410°C, and boiling at 5900°C. The uniqueness of this metal is that even when red-hot, it is also hard.

If we consider in this aspect tungsten electrodes, which are doped with oxides of rare earth elements, then they are even more durable.

Today the market offers tungsten electrodes with a wide range of chemical compositions.

For example, it is no secret that various oxides of rare earth metals are added to pure tungsten in order to improve welding technology and welding characteristics.

It can be cerium, lanthanum, yttrium, thorium, and zirconium. Whatever electrode is chosen, it is usually surrounded by a ceramic nozzle, and argon (an inert gas) is blown out of it during welding.

Proper welding of discs with argon

Argon welding
The alloy grade of the disk and the filler wire or electrode rod must be the same. The manufacturer places a mark on the outside indicating the composition of the material. The most common alloys are silicon or magnesium.

Important!

It is necessary to select the correct filler wire diameter based on the thickness of the welded area. For welding, the additive 4043, silicon or magnesium, is most often used.

Before welding itself, you need to prepare, clean and degrease (using acetone) the surfaces to be welded.

Required equipment and materials:

  • Bulgarian;
  • argon arc welding machine;
  • electrodes, meltable or non-meltable;
  • filler wire, if a consumable electrode is used;
  • protective equipment for welder.

After welding the crack, it is necessary to remove excess metal so that the balancing of the disk is not disturbed.
