Construction stapler - types, what staples to use and repair features

Simultaneously with the invention of the office stapler, construction models appeared. Soon the conventional mechanical device was supplemented with an improved electrical version. Both in the office and in construction, the stapler has gained wide popularity. This is a tool that furniture makers cannot do without. If there is a need to purchase this device, then first we will figure out what types of staplers there are and how they differ.

Types of staplers and their purpose

A construction stapler is a device that is used to fasten various materials using special staples. This device is also called a staple gun, staple gun, staple gun, or even a pistol. The tool is popular not only among furniture upholsterers, but also among workers in various fields. It is always useful in the household, because with its help you can quickly and efficiently connect two different parts.

Construction staplers are divided into types based on the type of drive. What they are and how they differ, we will find out further:

  1. Mechanical is the most common type of device, which is popular not only among home craftsmen. The device is activated by applying physical force. The denser the material into which the staples are hammered, the more effort a person needs to put in. A mechanical stapler is characterized by its small size, low cost and lack of connection to an electrical network or compressor

  2. Electric - the principle of their operation is the use of electricity. The staples fire when the trigger is lightly pressed. The physical effort required to fire staples in mechanical staplers is replaced by an electric drive. It should be noted that electrical appliances are divided into mains and battery-powered. Mains ones require connection to an outlet, while rechargeable ones are more bulky and require regular battery charging.

  3. Pneumatic - if mechanical ones use physical force, and electric ones use the force created by an electric motor, then in pneumatic ones, the main drive device is compressed air. This air is supplied from a compressor, so the stapler is tied to the equipment, which makes it inconvenient to use. If electrical and mechanical models are used not only by specialists, but also by home craftsmen, then pneumatic devices are often used only by professionals. The advantage of the tool is its relatively low cost, which is higher than mechanical ones, but less than electric ones.

For home use, a mechanical stapler is sufficient, which, unlike an electric one, can be used in any conditions. Such devices are unpretentious, affordable and provide high reliability of work. It is about manual staplers that will be discussed in the material.

The stapler does not drive the staples in completely.

If your stapler was working properly, but at one point stopped finishing fasteners into the same material that it had worked perfectly before, then most likely the reasons may be the following:

  • Air line pressure too low. You won’t believe it, but many people forget to control the pressure in the pneumatic line and attribute everything to the tool’s inoperability. Be sure to check before starting work and during it that the pressure is within the limits recommended by the pneumatic tool manufacturer;
  • Worn rubber sealing ring on the piston. This ring ensures correct pressure distribution in the piston chamber. It may fail due to wear and tear. Sometimes, wear is aggravated by the incorrect use of lubricants or, in general, the lack thereof. In these cases, the ring must be replaced.
  • Wear of the tool striker. Over time, the striker wears out at the point where it hits the fastener. This can manifest itself in the form of both uniform crushing of the striker and chipping of part of it. In this case, the firing pin must be replaced.

How does a mechanical device work and the principle of its operation?

The tool in question is activated by applying physical effort. That is why this device is also called a manual stapler. Its design and operating principle differs from that of a stationery device. Construction tools develop a lot of force, which is necessary for fastening or securing materials. According to the design of the drive mechanism, products are divided into two types - with a coil spring and a leaf spring. The main structural elements of a construction stapler:

  1. Housing - often made of steel, inside which working parts and mechanisms are located. The body has a recess for your hand, which allows you to hold the device during use.
  2. Handle - connects to the impact mechanism, charging the spring and then firing the staple. It is this handle that the user must exert physical force on to operate the tool.
  3. The impact mechanism is the basis of the tool, since it is through this device that the staple is fired. The impact mechanism consists of a spring, a hammer, a shock absorber and a striker. The striker acts on the staple, pushing it out and driving it into the material. An integral element of the impact mechanism is also an adjusting screw, through which the force on the bracket is adjusted
  4. The compartment for installing fasteners is a special channel into which staple cartridges are installed. The ramming mechanism plays an important role in the design of the compartment. This is a special device that pushes the magazine with staples towards the striker as they are used
  5. Tip - hole through which staples are fed for driving them
  6. The latch is not the main element of the device, which is intended for transporting the tool. It fixes the handle in an inoperative state, thereby preventing accidental impact on it

A detailed diagram of the structure of a construction stapler is shown in the photo below.

Externally, all mechanical staplers have the same design, but the internal working mechanisms differ in design. The main difference is in the design of the impact mechanism, which is implemented using a conventional coiled and leaf or spring spring. How they differ from each other is described in detail.

  • A coil spring staple driver is a common type of stapler that falls under the category of household tools. Their main disadvantage is that they have a large load and recoil force. Long-term use causes physical fatigue in the hands, so the tool is not intended for prolonged use.

    The principle of operation of such a stapler is that the handle engages with the striker, thereby moving it upward, overcoming the resistance of the spring. The more the spring is compressed, the stronger the impact on the bracket. When the striker reaches the maximum upper position, it jumps off the handle mount, and thereby it moves downward at high speed, hitting the bracket with the striker. The staple, under the influence of the striker, shoots out of the tip, entering the material. You need to know the operating principle of a construction stapler in order to be able to eliminate its breakdowns when they occur.

  • Staple hammer with leaf spring - these staplers belong to the category of professional tools. They are characterized by smooth operation, increased service life, and also higher cost compared to household type staplers. However, this does not mean at all that such a stapler is intended exclusively for professional use. If you plan to use the tool frequently, it is better to take a device with a leaf spring.

    The principle of their operation is similar to devices that consist of a coiled spring. When you press the handle, the flat striker moves with simultaneous deformation of the combat plate. As soon as the striker reaches the maximum upper position, it will return to its original position with instantaneous speed. This is achieved due to the fact that the plate tends to take its original position. The hammer, returning downwards, impacts the firing pin, and the latter, in turn, strikes the bracket. Such devices are also equipped with force regulators. They have a more complex design, which is reflected in their cost.

The difference in price between these tools is significant, as is the service life. Before you buy a mechanical stapler for driving staples, you should answer the questions - what is the tool for and how often do you plan to use it.

This is interesting!
You can distinguish a stapler with a coil spring from a device with a plate externally by such a characteristic feature as the location of the adjusting screw. On devices of the first type, the screw is located on top, and on devices of the second type, the adjusting washer is located on the handle.

Electric and pneumatic models

The device of an electric tacker connected to a 220 V network is shown in the photo below.

The numbers indicate the following structural elements:

  • trigger;
  • fuse;
  • handle for holding the tool;
  • power cable;
  • on/off button;
  • mechanism for regulating the force of the shot;
  • magazine pusher;
  • magazine lock.

Inside the instrument body there are also:

  • an electric motor that charges the spring;
  • electric motor control board;
  • impact mechanism.

Battery products do not have a power cord. The power tool receives power from batteries.

Individual design elements of pneumatic staple guns are shown in the photograph below.

Inside the pneumatic tool there is a cylinder with a piston, as well as an air distribution unit. Compressed air for the operation of a construction stapler is supplied through a hose that can withstand high pressure, from a compressor unit or cylinder. Therefore, if problems arise with the operation of a pneumatic tacker, you first need to check the serviceability of the compressor with the air duct.

Technical characteristics of mechanical staplers

Knowing the structure and operating principle of mechanical type construction staplers, it is also necessary to understand their basic design characteristics. These characteristics include:

  1. Material - what the stapler body is made of. The most commonly used material is steel, while cheaper options are made from aluminum alloy. The simplest are products made of impact-resistant plastic, but they are not intended for frequent and prolonged use. The handle of steel and aluminum staplers can be covered with a rubber or polyurethane layer
  2. Dimensions and weight - all mechanical staplers are compact, so there are no difficulties with their storage and transportation. The length of the devices ranges from 155 mm to 230 mm, and the height varies from 120 to 200 mm. The width of 25-35 mm not only characterizes the dimensions of the tool, but also the possibility of using staples of different sizes. Hand-held models weigh from 300 to 800 grams, and if the device body is plastic, then their weight is even less
  3. Impact force - this parameter for manual staplers is the lowest compared to electric ones, and even more so, pneumatic ones. The impact force is regulated by a special screw, which is equipped with all models of staplers
  4. Impact frequency or rate of fire - this parameter is measured in the number of staples driven in one minute. For hand tools this figure is the lowest. Electric models show the following results - from 20 to 50 staples per minute, and the most highly productive are pneumatic counterparts, which fire 50-60 times per minute
  5. The depth of driving the staples - this parameter depends on the impact force of the tool, as well as the type of material for driving the staples. Mechanical staplers are capable of driving 10-15 mm staples, while their modern rivals, electric and pneumatic devices, can handle 50 and even 100 mm fasteners. However, on the farm there is rarely a need to connect various parts using such long staples, especially since it is much more reliable to make the connection using self-tapping screws

It should be noted that manual staplers are designed for driving staples into hard surfaces. Often these are wood, plywood and plastic. The need to use a stapler arises when there is a need to attach woven materials to solid substrates. In addition to the fact that the stapler copes with this task quickly, the resulting result is also decorative, which is why these tools are widely used in the field of furniture construction and repair.

Unlike mechanical devices, electrical and especially pneumatic devices allow you to attach soft materials to hard ones, and even provide a connection between two hard surfaces. For such purposes, staples of appropriate thickness and strength are used. We will learn further about what types of staples for construction staplers are produced.

Types of faults and repairs

Absence of a fastening element (staple/nail) in the materials being fastened. Most often it occurs when consumables leave the store. The stapler should be rendered inoperative. The cartridge with consumables is removed from the holder. If possible, remove the pusher. The clip tilts to the side, as it is hinged. The jammed part (staple/nail) is removed with tweezers or a narrow flat screwdriver. Next, the stapler is prepared for further work in the reverse order.

The slaughter of fastened materials with two or more elements (staple/nail). This can happen due to two reasons. The first is due to wear (bevel) in any direction of the end surface of the striker. The impact device cover must be removed. Disconnect and remove the firing pin. Bring the end surface of the striker to the correct shape with a fine file or sandpaper. The main condition is that the end surface should not have a convex appearance. Otherwise, the edges of the staples will protrude when slaughtered. To maintain the action distance of the striker, grind off the supporting surface of the buffer/shock absorber (polyurethane gasket), adjacent to the body of the impact device, to a size corresponding to the size of the striker being ground.

The second is the deformation of the guide surface of the impact device body. For mechanical staplers, this is deformation of the surface of the casing adjacent to the firing pin.

Removed with a hammer or pliers.

The drummer works “idle”.

In mechanical staplers, it occurs as a result of early dismounting of the rocker arm from the supporting surface of the striker groove. In this case, a bevel is produced in this place, which is removed strictly perpendicular to the surface of the striker with a file.

For other staplers, if the body is overheated, this indicates an unsatisfactory condition of the rubbing surfaces or breakage of individual elements (for example, springs). Bringing the stapler into working condition is possible by replacing faulty elements.

When the lever/button is pressed, there is complete absence of action from the impact device.

In mechanical staplers, there is a violation of the interaction of the striker with the return spring (for example, a break in the support plate under the spring). In this case, instead of one upper rivet securing the striker to the striker, you can install a screw with two nuts and shorten the spring by the size from the screw to the support plate. For other staplers, there is no power supply to the electromagnet coil or compressed air to the cavity of the pneumatic cylinder.

Please remember: carry out all repairs and maintenance when there is no power.

tool and rendering it inoperative.

A stapler is a compact tool designed to connect various elements using metal staples. There are two types of staplers - stationery and installation. Stationery ones are designed for fastening paper sheets, and mounting ones are for connecting solid materials, the density of which does not interfere with the passage of fasteners.

Stationery stapler

Stationery staplers provide end-to-end fastening of sheets of paper with staples and subsequent bending of their tails. Thanks to this, the reliability of the connection increases significantly. The operating principle of this device is very simple. A plate with staples loaded into the feed tray is subjected to point pressure, as a result of which one of them breaks off. It cuts into paper sheets, piercing them through, after which its tails rest against a special rigid plate that has indentations, which leads to their bending at a given angle.

Standard office-type staplers are designed to work with staples 6 and 8 mm high. Their rigidity is quite sufficient for punching up to 50 sheets. For more serious tasks, large devices are used that work with tall staples made of thick wire. Large staplers are designed for staples up to 26 mm high.

Fasteners for staplers are sold in packages. Each of which contains 20 plates, consisting of 50 brackets connected in a row. Thus, the pack is enough to carry out 1 thousand fixations.

It is worth noting that in order to achieve high-quality joining of sheets of paper, it is not so much the design of the stapler itself that is important, but the use of high-quality consumables. A cheap tool that works with good fasteners will be significantly better than an expensive one with cheap consumables installed. Still, it cannot be said that the cost and quality of the instrument itself does not matter.

Cheap models work well at first, but over time begin to jam as a result of the reduced efficiency of the spring that feeds the staples. In addition, the extrusion mechanism may become deformed, as a result of which the impact begins not on one bracket, but on several at once. As a result, the tool becomes clogged as a result of several fasteners simultaneous exiting through the narrow feed slot.

With most staplers, the staple is extruded directly by a special plate, which extends when you press on the body of the device with your hand. Expensive and large devices designed for punching cardboard and large quantities of sheets have a more advanced design. They have an additional spring that acts as an amplifier. A special shoulder mechanism increases the force obtained from pressing, resulting in the release of the staple with less strain on the hands.

Additional features of office staplers

At first glance, a stationery stapler seems to be a completely simple design, which is unlikely to have any additional uses. This is wrong. For example, few people know that the plate into which the tails of the staples rest before bending can turn over. It has two installation positions. In the first, the technological recesses for bending the tails are close to each other, and in the second they are wider. In the first position, the staples are bent inward, after which their tails cut tightly into the sheets of paper being connected on the opposite side. In the second position of the plate, when the recesses are widely spaced, the staples bend outward. This type of fastening is used in cases where you need to temporarily attach a stack of paper, but in the future it will have to be disconnected. This fastening method provides reliable fixation, but at the same time, minimal effort is required to remove the bracket.

Also, many models of office staplers can open up, as a result of which their shape turns from an acute angle into a straight line. This technical solution in the design is made for the purpose of driving staples into the surface without bending them, which is necessary when attaching paper sheets to various materials. For example, using a tool in this position, you can attach a notice to a board or tree trunk.

Some varieties of the instrument have a protruding pointed plate at the opposite end. It is necessary to remove previously clogged staples. To do this, you need to drive it under the installed staple and pull the stapler towards you. It is worth noting that this method is quite productive, but not the best. It is much more convenient to use a special tool called an anti-stapler.

Mounting staplers

The mounting stapler is used for nailing various materials with staples. The reliability of such a connection is in no way inferior to small nails, while the nailed material receives a larger pressing area than the head of a nail or screw can provide. This is especially important in cases where fabric or plastic film needs to be fixed. There are three types of mounting staplers:

  • Mechanical.
  • Electrical.
  • Pneumatic.
Mechanical stapler

Is the most popular. This is facilitated by its low cost, thanks to which everyone can afford it. It can be used anywhere because it does not need to be connected to an electrical outlet or a compressor. Its design is very simple and has much in common with a stationery stapler. The only difference is that the mounting models have a much more powerful spring, the erection of which to strike the staples is carried out by a special mechanism with a handle. When you squeeze the trigger mechanism with your palm, one operation is carried out.

It should be noted that a mechanical stapler quite often fails to cope with the task. The spring used in it wears out over time and becomes softer. As a result, the staple can only penetrate halfway into the material. Often it warps to the side and simply becomes deformed. These problems are especially common in the cheap segment. As for expensive devices, they last much longer. The disadvantage of all mechanical staplers is the need to apply significant effort to hammer each staple. If you need to make several dozen fastenings, then this is not a problem, but when you have to work for a long time, your hand gets very tired.

When working with a mechanical mounting stapler, you need to take into account that you should not place more than one plate of staples into the loading slot at the same time. Even if some of the consumables were used in the instrument, until they are completely exhausted, adding other brackets is not recommended. This is due to the fact that the optimal stroke width of the feed compression spring will be disrupted. As a result, over time it will begin to press less and less, which will lead to jamming of the staples inside the tray.

Electric stapler

It also has a spring in its design. Its construction is carried out by an electric drive. Thanks to this, working with such devices is much easier, although the tool itself is heavier than a mechanical one. It should be noted that despite reducing the load on the hands, such devices also have their drawbacks. First of all, this concerns the electrical wire, which constantly gets in the way. Relatively recently, battery-powered models have appeared that do not need to be connected to the network. This significantly expanded the range of operation of such devices, but still led to an increase in the weight of the instrument.

Electric devices belong to a more expensive price segment than manual ones. They have high productivity, so they are often used in various industries. In particular, they are used in furniture upholstery. This tool is especially popular among craftsmen who reupholster furniture at the client’s home. Using such a stapler allows you to work quickly, and there is no need to carry a compressor, which is necessary when using more powerful pneumatic equipment.

The electric drive device has an additional degree of protection to prevent the staple from accidentally flying out when the button is pressed. Before refilling an electric stapler, you must unplug it from the outlet. Otherwise there is a risk of injury. In addition, many models have a locking mechanism that will not allow you to open the tray to install a plate with fasteners while the device is connected to the network. Some devices have a special “rev” button, which allows you to put the device into safe mode and open the loading tray.

Material for making staples for a stapler

Manufacturers produce staples from various materials, which allows them to expand their scope of application. They come in the following types:

  • Aluminum - used for working with non-solid types of materials
  • Copper - these staples are also called decorative, as they are intended for covering furniture with various types of fabrics
  • Steel ones are the most popular and inexpensive. They can be used for driving not only into soft, but also hard materials. The main disadvantage is that they rust over time.
  • Stainless - made of stainless steel, and used when it is necessary to prevent the occurrence of corrosion processes

Additional zinc coating of the brackets eliminates the occurrence of corrosion processes. When choosing fasteners of the appropriate material, it is necessary to take into account what you plan to connect.

general information

Often the staples are shaped like the letter “P”. Most people are used to using them to bind paper. However, they are also used in the process of upholstery of furniture and walls, when fastening drywall, in the production of packaging, and so on. The main advantages of staples for a stapler are their invisibility and reliability. For convenience, the tips of the products are most often pointed. Thanks to this, they easily penetrate the surface.

Staples are most often sold in blocks. This makes “loading” the stapler much easier. In the first models of the device they had to be placed one at a time. However, now glue is used for fastening. The strips are inserted into a special box of the device and pushed out one at a time when pressed. The mechanism of each stapler is designed for a specific size and shape of staples, which must be taken into account when purchasing.

Fasteners for staplers according to shape

Staples for construction staplers come in different shapes, which is done specifically in order to expand the scope of their application. The following varieties are distinguished:

  1. U-shaped
  2. U-shaped
  3. T-shaped

U-shaped and U-shaped staples have almost the same shape, but their scope of application is radically different. U-shaped devices are the most popular and are used almost everywhere. U-shaped devices are used in the field of electrical work. With their help, cable lines are secured during their installation. T-staples are an alternative replacement for nails, but they don't require you to hit the head dozens of times to get it into the surface. A distinctive feature of T-shaped staples from nails is that the former have a rectangular or square head shape.

Stapling Types

Stationery staplers can be divided according to the method of fastening sheets. Among them, the most common option, which is often used by office workers, is closed-type stapler devices. During operation, this tool bends the edges of the staple inward. This method provides the most reliable connection of sheets. Therefore, it is not surprising that such staplers are the most popular.

There are also open type staplers. They differ from devices with a closed stitching method in that they bend the staples outward. They are indispensable when you need to temporarily stitch paper sheets. Subsequently, the fastened sheets can be easily separated, and no traces remain on them.

Some office workers sometimes purchase staplers with straight staples for work. It makes sense to use them when there is a need to fix sheets of paper on a special board with a soft surface. For example, it could be a base made of cork.

The hardness of staples and what it affects

The greater the hardness of the consumable, the higher the efficiency of its penetration into the surface of the driven material. To understand why staples of different hardnesses are produced, you need to imagine a picture when it is necessary to drive a staple into a board made of hard wood. A soft aluminum or copper staple will not penetrate the surface of such wood. The result is a damaged bracket with bent legs. To prevent this from happening, manufacturers produce consumables with the following hardness names:

  1. Simple
  2. Very hard
  3. Red-hot

A description of the degree of hardness of the staples is presented in ascending order. The ends of the devices may have additional sharpening, which allows for effective insertion of the part into the surface of solid materials with the least resistance.

Staple shapes

Despite the fact that many are accustomed to seeing U-shaped staples, there are other options that are used much less frequently. In general, according to this criterion, only 3 types of products can be distinguished:

  • U-shaped – rectangular, they are the most popular and versatile;
  • U-shaped – made in the shape of an arc, most often used for fastening wires and cables;
  • T-shaped - the least common, they allow you to make the most hidden fastening that does not carry a special load.

In addition to the basic shape, staples can differ in the type of sharpening of the tips. The sharper they are, the easier they are to use. The backs may also differ: there are narrow, wide and flat. The first are suitable for inconspicuous fastenings, the second - for more reliable work (plasterboard, chipboard), and the third - for non-woven materials.

Dimensions of fasteners for construction staples, their purpose and application

Often, when purchasing a mechanical stapler, a set of staples is included with it. These devices come in different sizes, which must be considered depending on their application. Moreover, they differ not only in the length of the back and the height of the legs, but also in thickness. When purchasing them, you can see that the packaging contains the following designations:

  • a—thickness
  • b - width

The most popular types of staples are the following:

  1. 53 is the most common version of products, which have a thickness of 0.7 mm and a width of 11.4 mm. Leg height from 4 to 14 mm is selected depending on the task at hand
  2. 140 - such products have a thickened shape of 1.2 mm with a back width of 10.6 mm. The height of the legs also ranges from 4 to 14 mm
  3. 36 - this marking indicates that the package contains U-shaped brackets for securing the cable
  4. 300 are nails for a special staple gun

Below is a table of staple sizes from different manufacturers.

A furniture stapler is widely used in the household; with its help you can easily nail down greenhouse film, cover furniture with fabric, and it will also come in handy in other situations. The variety of models will confuse the ignorant person, so in this article you will find useful tips on choosing how to use it, which brackets are suitable for which models. There are a wide variety of home staplers on sale; the first thing you need to pay attention to is the type of staple. The most popular and frequently used type of staple is type 53. Most models use type 53. This type has the following dimensions: staple width 11.4 mm, thickness - 0.7 mm. Of course, you don’t need to know these dimensions, you just need to know what staples your “pigalle” works on and their type. Secondly, what depth of staples can be driven in. Furniture guns can be simple (staples 4-8 mm deep, inexpensive). Most often made of plastic, intended for infrequent use. Only small staples are used, so they can only be used to nail fabric or paper. Cheap and simple, the price is about 100 rubles. Like these ones.

There are also options 4-10 (staples from 4 to 10 mm inclusive). Such pistols are already made of metal, although there is no adjustment screw. Yes, it is of no use, the staples can be driven in 10 mm without maximum adjustment. As a rule, type 53 staples are used. Staplers 4-14 mm (the very first photo in the article). The most popular and best-selling. Made of metal, solid, high quality. Use staples 4-14 mm deep with 53 type. The main difference from others is the presence of an adjusting screw, with which you can increase or decrease the impact force. As a rule, if the staple is more than 10 mm deep, then the screw must be tightened in the direction of increasing the impact force, otherwise the staple will not completely enter the wood. A wide range of bracket sizes (4,6,8,10,12,14 mm) will allow you to choose the optimal depth for the job. Among the good models, we can highlight reliable and high-quality ones, the price is 330 rubles. Also among the household models, it is necessary to highlight the model with bracket type 140. It is thicker, has dimensions: width 10.6 mm and thickness 1.2 mm. If you load type 53 staples into a type 140 stapler, it will shoot 2 staples at a time. Therefore, it is so necessary to know the type on which “pigalle” works. Most often, guns with 140 type support several types of staples, these are small nails and semicircular staples for driving in cables. We can say that this is a universal option, which is a pleasure to work with. However, it does not support the most popular type 53 bracket. The Stayer stapler, shown in the photo below, supports 4 types of staples: type 140, type 300, type 500 and type 36. Its price is 650 rubles.

Staple type 53 is the most used and is used in most staplers. Rectangular Bracket width 11.4 mm Thickness 0.7 mm. Dimensions (depth) 4-14 mm. Sold in packs of 1000 pieces. There are 2 types: hardened and simple. Tempered ones are used for strong or laminated wood (chipboard). Regular staples are 2 times cheaper and are designed for soft wood. Type 140 Powerful, thick staples, also used for fastening materials to wood, plywood, chipboard. Rectangular bracket. Width - 10.6 mm Thickness - 1.2 mm Dimensions 4-14 mm Packages of 1000 pieces. The cost is higher than that of type 53 staples. Type 36 Semicircular cable clamps. Bracket width - 7.6 mm (cable with a diameter of no more than 6.4 mm can be pinned) Thickness - 1.2 mm Dimensions - 10, 12. 14 mm Type 300 Small nails with a T-shaped head. Used for fastening to wood, wood, chipboard. Nail thickness - 1.2 mm Dimensions - 10, 12 and 14 mm. Type 500 Carnations without a head (finish type). In general it looks like type 300, only there is no cap. Dimensions - 10,12, 14 mm. If you are engaged in furniture production and use the corresponding tool constantly in hard mode, then ordinary household models will not last long. Therefore, there are professional options for such purposes. The RAPID tool has proven itself to be excellent. This company specializes in the production of only furniture guns, so they are of excellent quality. However, their cost is rather high, for example. A standard gun for type 53 staples costs 2,200 rubles. However, according to reviews from customers who bought a couple of these models from us, they are very strong. Before that, they bought ordinary household ones, but they often broke down. Therefore, it was decided to buy 1 professional one for testing - it outlasted 10 conventional staplers. As you can see, the difference is simply huge. For home use, an ordinary inexpensive one, for example, will be enough. How to insert staples For those who are picking up a stapler for the first time, this can be a problem. But after the first time you will learn right away, nothing complicated. Here's a photo for you.

First, take out the “staple pusher” with the spring from the gun, then insert the staples with the point down and push them in with the “spring thing” until it clicks into place. Preparing the stapler for use Pull out the latch, which is located at the back of the stapler. Insert the staples into the special groove. The staples should be inserted with the tips facing down. (P) Reinstall the latch and spring. The stapler is ready for use. How to use a stapler Place the stapler firmly against the surface where you want to drive the staple. Without lifting the stapler from the surface, press the lever until you hear a characteristic sound. This action will require mechanical effort. If the staple does not fly out, it means it is stuck and you need to get it out by completing 4 steps to prepare the stapler for use. Ready. The staple has been successfully driven in. In order to avoid injury from a furniture stapler, it is important to thoroughly understand how to use such a tool. If you are using a mechanical stapler, first adjust the adjuster screw. The adjustment must be made on the rough material, rotating the regulator from minimum to maximum. If the fastener does not enter the material from the first blow, then you will need to adjust your furniture stapler again, and if it does, then start working on the “finishing” part. To drive staples at the required distance, it is best to mark such places in advance using a pen or pencil. You can also use a clamp, which must maintain the same distance when driving in fasteners without preliminary markings. Don’t forget to also hold the material while making shots so that the material cannot move when driving in the staple. Do not forget to also monitor the presence of staples so as not to be left without them at the most inopportune moment for you. When the tool is not in use, secure the handle with the safety lock. This is required for safety reasons. By following these simple recommendations, you can easily cope with upholstery of a sofa or other necessary task associated with a furniture stapler; the price always depends on the type of tool and its manufacturer. Construction stapler repair.

How to use a construction stapler correctly

Before using the tool, you must first select the appropriate type of brackets and install them in the device compartment. To charge a new fastener, the following manipulations are carried out:

  1. The first step is to block the device handle from accidentally pressing it.
  2. At the back of the tool there is a special hatch with a rod and a pusher (removal mechanism), when removed, a compartment opens for installing a cartridge cassette of staples
  3. The cassette is installed inside the compartment, turning it so that the legs point down
  4. Next, we return the ramming mechanism to its place, thereby pressing the staples
  5. The handle is removed from the safety lock
  6. The tool is ready for use. Now you can make a few test shots to make sure the device is working.

In a similar sequence, staples of different sizes and shapes are installed or charged. However, before installing the appropriate fasteners into the tool, you must make sure that it is designed to work with them.

After this, you can begin to use the construction stapler for its intended purpose. It is not difficult to work with a furniture stapler, and the only regulator is to adjust the impact force. If, when you try to drive in the staple, it does not go in all the way, then you need to rotate the adjuster in a clockwise direction. If the fastener is deeply recessed inside the material, then it is necessary to loosen the spring pressure.

This is interesting!
When the staples in the gun run out, it is not recommended to click the handle idle.
The mechanism of the tool wears out with each blow, so the device will not last long in this case. Features of adjusting the impact force for household and professional staplers:

  • Features of setting household staplers - tightening the screw clockwise helps compress the spring. As a result, the staples are fired with greater force, which will also contribute to its penetration deeper into the material. If you turn the regulator in the opposite direction, the blow will be weaker
  • Setting up a professional stapler - the regulator is located near the handle. When it rotates, the impact force also increases or decreases. The tool needs adjustment every time the material being processed is changed.

The tool is considered to be correctly adjusted when the staple is completely inserted into the material. You should start using the tool only after the impact force has been correctly adjusted.

This is interesting!
Often, during the operation of a furniture stapler, a situation arises when the staple does not completely enter the material. The reason for this phenomenon is that the spring wears out. If you adjust the impact force of the screw to the maximum value, and the fasteners do not go in completely, then the tool needs repair.

The stapler does not shoot staples.

The table below will indicate the main reasons and their possible solutions. If, after applying the recommendations, the tool still does not work in normal mode, we recommend contacting the service department, where you will receive a complete and high-quality repair of your stapler.

Which construction stapler is better?

Today, a lot of construction staplers are produced, which differ not only in their external design features. They differ in performance and resource. However, one can argue with these words, because the duration of the resource depends on the features of using the tool. Before you buy a construction stapler for your home, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the popular models that received the highest rating in the rating - inexpensive and high quality. You can choose which construction stapler is better by yourself by familiarizing yourself with the models presented below:

  1. STAYER 31510 is an inexpensive and very effective household type stapler. Despite the German name, this instrument is produced in China. It is distinguished by high reliability and reliability. Reviews show that the device is resistant to various negative impacts - falls and shocks. The handle has a rubberized layer, which eliminates the possibility of calluses forming during prolonged use of the tool.

  2. The whirlwind is a very powerful tool that can cope with any complexity of housework. It is used not only for upholstering furniture, but also for fastening sheet materials. It has a high impact force, which allows it to pierce plywood. This powerful household tool weighs 500 grams, which can be called a disadvantage. Another drawback is the rigidity of the handle, due to which greater impact force is achieved. Reviews show that the resource of the tool with frequent use is quite long, and if you need a reliable stapler, then you should take a closer look at the models from the Vikhr company

  3. Gigant is another reliable staple gun from the Chinese manufacturer. It has a simple design, which has a positive effect on its cost. The body material is coated with chrome, which ensures reliable protection against corrosion. Impact mechanism made of tool hardened steel ensures long service life of the tool

It should be noted that when choosing, one should take into account such a factor as cost. The higher the price for a particular model, it means the tool is made of higher quality materials and will last longer. If you once had to work with an electric stapler, then you are unlikely to consider mechanical models. However, it makes no sense to buy an electric staple gun if you plan to use it no more than a few times a month. If a mechanical stapler malfunctions, it will not be difficult to disassemble it and repair it yourself.

Algorithm for disassembling the stapler and troubleshooting problems

To independently repair a broken stapler for mechanical furniture, you will need the following tools:

  • screwdrivers;
  • vice;
  • needle file or small file for metal;
  • hammer;
  • pliers.

In some cases, you may also need a hand saw for metal or a grinder; when repairing power tools, a multimeter and a soldering iron with a soldering kit.

To check the freedom of movement of consumables inside the magazine, simply open it or pull out the pusher.

Replacing a spring or repairing a worn impact mechanism is performed in the following sequence:

  • take out the remaining consumables from the store;
  • unscrew the screw that regulates the impact force;
  • remove the spring;
  • disassemble the tool body, to do this, remove the washers and pull out the pins;
  • take out the impact mechanism;
  • if the fault is related to the spring, then replace it;
  • when the firing pin is worn out (there is wear in the striker or at the point of contact with the rocker arm of the starting lever), it is clamped in a vice and the parts are given their original shape using a file or needle file;
  • Reassemble the tool in reverse order, lubricating the impact mechanism.

The spring stop on the impact mechanism may also be broken (photo below), and because of this, the staple gun does not work well. In this case, to eliminate the malfunction, you will need to weld the stop using welding.

Repairs do not take much time and often do not require financial costs, but they extend the service life of the staple gun.

How to disassemble and repair a pneumatic staple gun is shown in the video below.

Disassembly and preventative maintenance of the electric model of the staple gun is shown in the video below.

Do-it-yourself repair of a construction stapler

Often during the operation of tools, their malfunction occurs. A mechanical stapler is no exception, repair of which may be required soon after purchase if the cheapest option is purchased.

Let's look at the features of repairing a furniture stapler using the example of a malfunction when two staples shoot out.

Why does the stapler shoot two staples, and is it possible to fix such a breakdown? First we need to figure out why it shoots two fasteners. The reason for this malfunction is the weakening of the clamping force of the staple cassette. The pressure is provided by the rammer. Over time, the spring loses its clamping properties, which leads to a defect when the device fires two staples at once.

You can fix this in the following way:

  • For staplers with a spring type of spring, make a U-shaped plate and place it between the latch and the rammer. Such a plate will eliminate free movement of the rammer, and as a result the stapler will hit exactly one staple

  • For staplers with coil springs, increase the force of the rammer spring. This can be done by adding spacers in the form of washers

A detailed description of the mechanical stapler repair process is presented in the video material.

No less popular is the problem when staples do not fly out of the stapler.

If in the first case the problem is solved without the need to disassemble the device, then here you cannot do without it. It is easy to disassemble the stapler, depending on its model. To do this, remove the cotter pin washers, and then disassemble the tool. Next you need to get to the impact mechanism, since the malfunction is associated with it. Repairing a construction stapler with a malfunction such as staples not firing is as follows:

  1. The sides of the striker are inspected
  2. There should be no licked areas where they come into contact with the handle. The presence of such indicates that the striker does not move to the upper position, but jumps off almost immediately when you press the handle
  3. The licked areas of the edges must be ground off with a grinder, after which we can assume that the tool has been repaired

  4. All that remains is to assemble it and check the proper functioning

Another type of failure of a mechanical stapler is when the staple shoots out in the shape of the letter “M”.

This type of fastening is not reliable, so the problem must be corrected as quickly as possible. We will consider the reasons for this malfunction and the features of its elimination below:

  1. If the staples jam in the shape of the letter “M”, then the reason is the development of the striker
  2. The firing pin is a plate that is connected to the firing pin
  3. This type of breakdown often occurs due to the fact that the firing pin is made of low quality steel. With prolonged use of the tool, abrasion of the end part of the striker occurs, which contributes to the creasing of staples in the shape of the letter “M”
  4. Alignment of the striker is carried out using a fine-grain file
  5. It is important to take into account that it is not recommended to remove a large amount of edge from the striker, as this will affect the reduction in impact force

After repairing the construction stapler, you can continue to use it. The instrument in question is distinguished by its versatility, for which it has gained wide popularity. In conclusion, it should be noted that, like any other type of tool, a furniture stapler needs lubrication. The impact mechanism is lubricated with lithol or grease, which reduces friction and therefore increases the service life of the device.

Stapler device

Staple guns, based on the type of energy with which fasteners are driven into the surface of the material, are divided into the following types:

  • mechanical;
  • pneumatic;
  • electric.

In everyday life, mechanical and electrical models of tackers are mainly used. Pneumatic tools belong to the professional category.

Mechanical models

Any furniture stapler has in its design a magazine for fasteners, inside of which there is a clip with guides. Consumables are inserted into it when performing work operations.

The magazines of some models have a transparent insert. This is convenient during work because it allows you to control the remaining amount of fasteners.

The device of a mechanical type staple gun is shown in detail in the photograph below.

The impact-return mechanism (striker) is a plate. Its size corresponds to the geometric parameters of the consumables used. The firing pin is attached to the striker - its shape is determined by the design of the taker. In this case, the other side of the hammer comes into contact with the spring, the compression of which is adjusted using a screw. Shock absorption is provided by a polyurethane shock absorber, which is located inside the body.

Manual staplers can be equipped with two types of springs:

  • twisted (shown in the photo above), installed on inexpensive models;
  • plate (spring type, photo below), more powerful and expensive compared to the first.

A mechanical staple gun is controlled by a lever (handle). He cocks the impact-recoil mechanism. During transportation or storage, a safety clip protects against accidental operation.

Materials for staples

It is customary to use metals in the production of staples. Due to the variety of resources, you can vary the cost of the finished product, strength and other characteristics. In most cases, 4 main metals are used for manufacturing:

1. Aluminum is the most economical option. It is rarely used on hard surfaces and areas that must withstand high loads. If too much force is applied during application, these staples will become deformed. Their main advantage is resistance to rust;

2. Copper staples are also often used when working with non-rigid materials. They also do not rust, but due to their high cost, they are not nearly as common as aluminum ones. Very often they are used for fastenings under wallpaper or plaster;

3. Steel – more durable and practical. They may or may not be hardened, which affects the final cost. Unfortunately, such staples are prone to rusting;

4. Galvanized – the most stable. Most of the branded staples are made from this metal. Due to their reliability, they provide long-term fastening.

Regardless of material, staples may or may not be sharpened. The former are better suited for a manual stapler. They allow you to work without pressure. The second option is most practical in automated production, where electrical gadgets are used.

How to insert staples into a stapler

For those who don't interact with a variety of staplers often, the question of exactly how to place staples for the job may be far from obvious. It all depends on the type of device.

Stationery stapler

Most of these devices have a special cover that must be opened. There is a spring there that is manually retracted. Next, the strip of staples is installed in the compartment that appears. After this, you can lower the mechanism so that it firmly secures the strip in the stapler. To check how correctly the staples are selected and installed, just staple a couple of sheets of paper together.

Electric stapler

This option is also called automatic. Here, first of all, you need to disconnect the device from the network or remove the batteries. Next you need to press the “rev” button. After this, a special slot for staples slides out. Having placed the fasteners in it, you can close the device, connect it and check it.

Construction stapler

Another extremely popular stapler, which is actively used during finishing work.
Threading staples is in many ways similar to the stationery option. At the bottom of the gadget you need to remove the spring. Next, the strip is inserted into the compartment and fixed. The main thing is to press the spring all the way. After this, you can check the device and continue using it for its intended purpose. By choosing the right staples for your stapler, you can easily use it for many years, just periodically updating the strip. The main thing is to take into account the size of the staples, their type, shape and the material from which they are made. In this case, the work will be productive and safe.

Not just parentheses

Some staplers can work not only with staples, but also with studs of various shapes. The designations of what the stapler works with are indicated on its body or in the instructions.

I tuck the nails into the stapler in the same way as with staples, but you need to be careful after pulling out the spring. A row of nails must be loaded along one of the outer edges of the letter “P”, and not inside this very letter!

If you want it to produce two nails side by side when working with a stapler, load the second row along the second outer edge. Next, the spring is inserted and the stapler is closed.

Pneumatic staplers

This type of tool is used mainly in medium and high power production. It is characterized by high productivity: a speed of 50-60 staples per minute is the norm. A pneumatic construction stapler differs in structure: there is no spring, the impact occurs due to the energy of compressed air. The air supply is provided by a compressor, and the moment of supply is determined by pressing the trigger. In stationary models this can be a foot pedal, but in manual models it can be a familiar trigger or button.

Pneumatic staplers operate using compressed air supplied from a compressor.

When choosing, you should also pay attention to what fasteners this unit can use. By the way, they can drive even longer staples and nails - on average 50-80 mm, but you can also find those that work with 100 mm nails.

For this equipment, the most important parameter is operating pressure. The minimum is 4 Bar, on average 5-6 Bar. Accordingly, the compressor must guarantee the required pressure.

One of the positive aspects is the light weight of the pistol - only about 1 kg. And this despite the fact that they are mainly made of steel.
