Application of edge banding equipment

The main area of application of such equipment is furniture production, here this type of machine is one of the mandatory elements of technical equipment.
For industrial needs, numerous machine models are offered, differing in performance, functions, price and other characteristics and suitable for working with both straight and curved surfaces. This group of units has a common characteristic - their productivity is too high for private use, so it makes no sense to spend money on purchasing a professional model. The operating principle of both factory-made and home-made machines is approximately the same - a decorative strip of material is glued to the untreated end of the panel, which not only covers the untreated material, but also protects the structure of the panels.

Edge banding equipment can handle a variety of materials, including:

  • veneer;
  • paper;
  • melamine;
  • PVC;
  • ABC, etc.

The layer of material can be very thin - from 0.4 mm, the width of the strip is usually from 2 to 6 cm. For gluing, a special glue is used, which firmly fixes the decorative edge.

Typical design

In order for the manufacture of an edge trimming machine to be successful with your own hands, you need to become familiar with the typical design of such a unit.

The cladding supply system consists of a roll, a guillotine and special rollers. There is also a special magazine where the beginning of the tape is fed. It is pulled by rollers to the very part that needs to be processed, along the way being covered with a layer of suitable glue, heated to the desired temperature.

There are some types of facing materials that immediately come with glue applied to them. In this case, it is enough to warm them up before use. If this is not the case, then the glue is contained separately in a special tray. Its temperature takes typical values of 150-200 degrees Celsius.

The pressure between the wooden part and the cladding is performed with a special support roller, although there may be several of them. When making a homemade edge banding machine, you can get by with just one such element, adding the necessary force with your physical strength.

The edge trimming machine is designed for removing edges from the surface of wooden blocks and boards. This operation can be done on an ordinary band saw. But at the same time, it is difficult to achieve precision processing and create a product with the required geometry parameters.

Design of edge trimming machine

Edger with two saws

Before you start making an edger with your own hands, you need to familiarize yourself with the specifics of its layout and design. This woodworking equipment is mandatory for completing specialized production lines and is intended for pre-processing of lumber before sanding.

Edge trimming machines have standard equipment. They consist of a frame that performs two functions. It houses mechanisms for sawing, and can also serve as a conveyor for feeding workpieces. An alternative option is to rigidly fix the wooden part to the surface of the working frame.

Depending on the design features, the following types of woodworking edge trimming machines are distinguished:

  • method of supplying materials - manual, automatic or semi-automatic. Manual models are simple in design, but have a low performance indicator. They are the best option for self-production;
  • by the number of saw blades – single and double saw blades. The former are intended for one-sided processing and are used extremely rarely. The optimal result is achieved after using two-saw models, since trimming occurs simultaneously along two edges of the workpiece;
  • movable or stationary carriage with saw blades. To make homemade woodworking equipment, it is recommended to make a subcutaneous carriage. This will allow you to control the processing process. But factory models are made with a fixed carriage. This helps improve productivity.

Additionally, a manual woodworking machine can be equipped with a system for removing cutting products - chips and wood dust. To do this, you can use a standard chip vacuum cleaner or its equivalent.

The optimal power of the power plant should be 4 kW or more. This is necessary for simultaneous processing of workpieces using a manual two-saw woodworking machine.

Recommendations for DIY production

General diagram of an edge trimming machine

At the first stage, it is necessary to draw up a design diagram of the equipment. It must include an accurate drawing indicating the location and main characteristics of the constituent elements. Without this, it will be impossible to make a high-quality and reliable edge trimming machine.

The best option for self-production would be a design with a movable carriage. To implement it, you can use a two-saw or four-saw cutting unit controlled by a manual mechanism. The latest edge trimmers will be able to form two workpieces in one pass. But at the same time, they will require a powerful power plant to operate.

Structural elements of manual woodworking equipment:

  • support frame. The workpiece will be fixed on it. It is best to make it welded from square profile pipes. The upper ones will be designed to move the carriage. Roller guides are attached between the side machines. With their help, you can feed workpieces with a large mass. Clamps or similar devices can be used to secure wooden parts;
  • movable carriage. A power unit is installed on it, which is connected to the drive shaft using a belt drive. To mount the disks, a special shaft must be made with the ability to change the position of the disks. The carriage moves along the frame guides using wheels.

Additionally, a lifting block should be provided to adjust the cutting depth. In this way, the maximum thickness of the workpiece can be significantly increased.

The control unit should be located on the side of the equipment. To increase the safety of operation of the woodworking machine, it is necessary to install a shield on the carriage. This way you can avoid chips getting into the electric motor.

Single Side Automatic Edge Banding Machines

Purpose: Automatic edge banding machine, pass-through type, designed for lining the edges of the straight sides of panels in automatic mode with various edge materials.

Principle of operation:

  • Fig.4
  • Fig.5
  • Fig.6

Let's consider the principle of operation on a machine with the maximum configuration of units and devices included in the machine. Machines are available with and without CNC. CNC machines are controlled by an electronic device capable of changing machine settings automatically; on non-CNC machines, equipment adjustment is done manually. During processing, workpieces are moved by means of a drive conveyor with an adjustable feed speed or without adjustment.

The first unit in the machines (Fig. 4 on the left) is the unit for preliminary milling of the end of the workpiece. Allows you to eliminate defects on workpieces that arise as a result of cutting (chips, steps from a scoring saw), as well as defects associated with the low quality of chipboard, MDF board materials (thickening at the ends). Next: IR - lamp for preheating the workpiece Allows preheating of the end of the workpiece before the glue-applying unit to improve adhesion and uniform distribution of the glue-melt. Next: Edge material feed magazine Includes a driven feed roller and a special holder for feeding strip material. Next: Glue application unit This unit is used to apply and adjust the amount of glue. The glue temperature is regulated by an electronic control unit, which ensures that the desired temperature is maintained and prevents overheating of the glue.

The following units installed on the machine are used to process the removal of edge material overhangs. The first unit (Fig. 14 on the left) is the overhang trimming unit. Finish trimming of edge overhangs is carried out automatically using two saws. Next: Overhang milling unit. The milling unit is equipped with two R2 radius cutters and floating tracers that allow you to monitor the thickness of the workpiece, which ensures excellent quality of the machined surface. Next: Unit for automatic rounding of the end corners of the glued edge material Allows you to automatically round the end corners of the edge material without stopping the workpiece. Next: The scraping unit carries out finishing processing of material (pvc/abs) with a thickness of 1 to 3 mm and completely eliminates such a defect as a “kinematic wave” that occurs when milling overhangs of edge material at high feed speeds.

The following units serve to impart a high-quality appearance to the resulting furniture piece. Industrial hair dryers (Fig. 15 on the left). Designed to restore the natural color of the edge material after processing at the scraping unit. Next: Polishing unit. Designed to polish the processed part of the edge, remove excess hot melt adhesive, and give it a natural color and shine.

Positional edgebanding machines are produced in Russia, the CIS and many countries in Europe and Asia with various characteristics.

Hot melt adhesive for automatic edge banding machines

The choice of hot melt adhesive is made depending on the equipment used and the tasks facing production. For medium-speed machines, the most suitable is the hot melt adhesive produced by Kleiberit 788.7, a medium-filled hot melt adhesive for edges made of veneer, PVC, ABS and impregnated paper for feed speeds up to 15 m/min, its technical characteristics can be viewed here. For high feed speeds, you can use hot melt adhesive 744.4, a medium-fill hot melt adhesive for veneer, PVC, ABS and impregnated paper edges for feed speeds from 20 to 40 m/min, its technical characteristics can be found here. There are machines manufactured by Holz-her that do not use granular hot melt adhesive, but cartridge adhesive. For these machines, Kleiberit has glue brand 782/.0, its technical characteristics can be found here.

Various solutions in machine design

Depending on the intended purpose and installation location, an edge-edging woodworking machine can combine the following design solutions:

  • internal combustion engine or electric;
  • the carriage with cutting elements is driven automatically/manually;
  • number of saws making simultaneous cuts (1, 2, 3...).

Common to the edge trimming machine are a frame with guides for moving the carriage, clamps - clamps for the workpiece, a control unit, and optionally - a laser ruler, which simplifies positioning operations.

Models for industrial production are distinguished by an automatic device for feeding wood under a stationary carriage. They are equipped with systems for removing sawdust, dust, and waste.

Tips for equipping your equipment

To reduce the design, two power units can be mounted on a homemade edge trimming machine. This will make it possible not to make a belt drive system, which will greatly facilitate the manufacturing process.

To move the carriage along the guides, you can make a long handle. Next to it there are usually buttons for activating/deactivating electric motors. This will make it possible to control the processing process from a safe distance.

In addition, the following additional components can be installed on edge trimming machines:

  • ruler;
  • cut depth indicator;
  • a protective mechanism that prevents motors from overheating.

Most often, improvised components are used to make this. Therefore, it is impossible to give clear recommendations for assembly. The technology directly depends on the characteristics of the constituent elements.

For example, you can look at the design and operation of a homemade woodworking edge trimmer:

Features of work

If a single-saw unit is installed on the edge trimming machine, then cut one side of the board first, and the other in reverse. This option is suitable for small processing volumes. A multi-saw edge trimming machine, which, if necessary, has up to 14 simultaneously operating saws, can reduce time and costs. The cutting is performed in 1 pass of the carriage.

Circular saws on the Taiga edge trimmer are installed with rotation in opposite directions.

A two-saw (or more) edge trimmer is adjusted manually, setting the gap between the cutting discs. Later models of two-saw edge trimming machines are equipped with electronic controls; there is no need to mechanically reconfigure the machine yourself. The rotation speed is changed by a switch, and a laser ruler is used to accurately position the board on the table.

Principle of edge trimming

Servicing of this type of equipment during operation is carried out by 2 people.

How to make a hand loom

You can make an edge trimmer yourself after some preliminary preparation. It is necessary to determine the main parameters of the future equipment, develop drawings of the edge trimming machine, and provide for the main and auxiliary equipment. It is useful to take into account the technical solutions of standard analogues from well-known manufacturers. Each homemade version finds wider application if it is unified in terms of raw materials and products.

The technical characteristics of taiga installations can serve as initial data:

  • engine power from 5.5 kW for a single-saw k1 to 15 kW for a two-saw k-2m;
  • circular saws ø 450 – 500 mm;
  • rotation speed – 3000 rpm;
  • adjustable distance between saws 50 – 340 mm;
  • cutting depth 85 – 105 mm;
  • permissible board dimensions 6.5 × 0.6 m.

The frame for placing the workpiece is welded from a channel to fit the size of the workpiece inside the passage of the cutting element. The main criterion is stability and lack of vibration during operation. Height 1 m. Guides for the carriage rollers are welded on the longitudinal sides.

It is better to make a homemade unit with a movable saw unit. This will allow you to control the feed speed and quality of the cut, and reduce defects.

We assemble the moving part from 2 U-shaped posts connected by a crossbar. This is a frame for mounting powered edge trimming saws.

The cleanliness of the cut can be improved by setting the overdrive gear to 5000 rpm. The engine for a homemade cutting unit is from 4 kW (single saw) and above, the Ø of the disc for a single saw edger is from 250 mm.

As the number of disks increases, performance improves. A three-saw edger will allow you to effectively cut timber, glazing beads, and slats with a minimum of costs.

Edge trimming machines: double-saw, single-saw

Any wood processing enterprise, from small to large, faces the problem of a large amount of waste when processing logs. The sawmill produces a rough cut of the log, cutting it to a square beam, and then, if necessary, cutting it into bars or edged boards of the required size. It is not rational to process rounded waste on a sawmill.

Wood edger

However, this waste can bring a lot of benefits and additional profit. Edged boards of small thickness, glazing beads and many other useful products are made from them. It is for this purpose that an edge trimming machine is installed at every woodworking enterprise.

The rotation speed is changed by a switch, and a laser ruler is used to accurately position the board on the table.

Principle of edge trimming

Servicing of this type of equipment during operation is carried out by 2 people.

Machine device

A design feature of this technique is that it performs three operations - final finishing, applying a film of decorating material and gluing it to the base of the part. In this case, the equipment must ensure not only the absence of radial runout of the smoothing cutter, but also a sufficiently strong clamp of the adhesive tape. For this purpose, special thermal adhesives are used, the physical and mechanical properties of which are determined by temperature. The dynamics of edge formation and quality are determined by strict adherence to temperature conditions and gluing technology.

The edging pattern depends on the following factors:

  • Type of material.
  • Thickness.
  • Shapes (strip or tape).
  • Overall dimensions and edge configuration.
  • Material and height of the main part.

To produce edges as part of an edge banding machine, it is necessary to make the following components:

  • Cassette for feeding tape;
  • Guide and feed rollers;
  • Cutting knife;
  • Bath with adhesive solution;
  • Support roller.
  • Clamping device.

The working cycle of edge formation includes feeding the adhesive tape with rollers, cutting it (with the necessary allowance) with beveled knives, applying glue to the surface of the edge, pressing the tape to it and then drying the gluing area.

In a machine that is to be assembled by hand, it is advisable to also provide a milling module, with the help of which the overhangs of the used facing material will be removed.

Making such equipment yourself is difficult. For many, a suitable way out of the situation would be to assemble a machine with manual feeding of edging materials. For such a machine, it is necessary to make a table from thick textolite, where a reel with adhesive tape and feed rollers, cutting knives, a clamp and a trimming head will be mounted. If you provide a table on a wedge-like base, then the installation can be used for shaped edges that make an angle other than 900 with the original surface of the part. You will also have to use for cladding only a rolled assortment of edge material with an already applied strip of adhesive composition.

Sequence of production and assembly of edgebands

Any powerful (at least 850 W) hair dryer is suitable as a device for heating the surface of the film, and a hand tool is usually used to drive the pressure and feed rollers - an electric drill or a universal grinder. For the drive mechanism for moving the workpiece on the table, you can use a crank mechanism as one of the spare parts for a foot-operated sewing machine.

The most difficult thing to make is the mechanism for cutting the tape. Of course, you can focus on a certain edge width, coordinating the dimensions of the tape with it, and this is what you do when the volume of use of the device is limited. In more complex situations, you will have to select a gear reducer that is suitable in terms of characteristics and design, the output shaft of which is connected to the displacement drive shaft. In this case, the cutting of the tape will occur synchronously with its movement, which will ensure better separation of the material.

The height of the workbench on which the edging frame is to be installed must be coordinated with the dimensions of the foot drive of the feed mechanism.

With the described arrangement, the operator needs to turn on the hair dryer (it must first warm up to the required temperature), insert the initial end of the tape into the feed rollers, feed the workpiece into the edge formation zone, manually press the tape to the workpiece, bring the hair dryer to the desired place, and hold the joint until it is completely ready. Then turn on the milling head mounted on the drill spindle and cut off the remaining adhesive material.

Since the DIY edge banding machine uses electrical drive technology, basic safety rules should be followed when using it:

  • Do not direct the air stream from the hair dryer onto conductive cables;
  • Do not allow particles from the overhangs to get into the moving parts of the inclined knives;
  • Turn off the milling module in a timely manner, taking into account that household drills do not have an emergency stop brake for the drive;
  • Correlate the dimensions indicated on the drawings with your own needs.

Like any home-made tool, the finished edger must be checked against the actual movement parameters of all modules, and only after that a trial edger must be performed on your own.

Edge trimming machine

Any woodworking shop from small to large is faced with the problem of a huge amount of waste in the process of processing logs. On a sawmill, rough cutting of logs is carried out until a square beam is obtained. Then, if necessary, the timber is cut into thinner bars or edged boards of the required size. The implementation of processing rounded waste at a sawmill is not rational.

Multi-rip edger

However, the waste obtained from such production can be used further, and even make a profit from it. From them you can make edged boards of small thickness, glazing beads, as well as other useful products, for example, pieces of furniture. For these purposes, an edge trimming machine is installed in woodworking shops.

According to the type of power supply of the power unit, the equipment is divided into:

  • electric
  • on liquid fuel.

The sawing unit can move along the guides manually or automatically using an electric drive.

Based on the quantity, the edge trimmer can be:

  • single saw. A single saw edger makes one cut in one pass. To cut the second side, the workpiece must be rotated
  • two-saw. Such equipment cuts the board on both sides in one pass. On the Russian market you can purchase models Data Center 450, Taiga K2M and others
  • multi-saw. In one pass of the workpiece, the shalevka is immediately cut into bars or boards of the required size.

Like any other machine, the edge saw has a frame on which workpieces and carriages with a motor that rotates the circular saws are placed. Such a machine can cut workpieces of any length and width, which significantly simplifies the work and reduces the amount of production waste.

Operation of an edger

The owner of each woodworking enterprise tries to minimize production waste for the most rational use of wood.

Often, sawmill shops install domestically produced devices, such as TsOD 450, Taiga, Kedr and others. In small workshops, they most often use machines created with their own hands from scrap materials.

Such machines make it possible to trim the rounded edges of shalevki and slabs to obtain an edged board. In addition, using an edge trimmer you can cut boards into bars and blanks with a thickness of 5 mm or more. The materials obtained in this way are used in the construction industry, as well as for decorating premises and creating furniture.

The operating principle of a single-saw, double-saw or multi-saw machine is the same. A wooden blank is placed on the bed, along which one or more circular saws moves. The carriage on which the saws rotate is moved by the machine operator manually or using an automatic system.

A single saw, like the TsOD 450, will require two passes to cut the edge on both sides. Most often, such machines are designed in such a way that trimming can be carried out by moving the carriage in both directions.

The double-saw edge trimming machine is designed in such a way that the circular saws rotate in different directions, cutting simultaneously from both sides, as a result of which labor productivity increases.

Multi-saw devices are needed for sawing wooden blanks into bars or boards of the required size. On such machines, up to 14 circular saws can be used simultaneously and in parallel.

In two-saw and multi-saw edge trimming machines, such as TsOD 450 or Taiga, the distance between the saws can be adjusted. This procedure on outdated models is performed mechanically, by the operator’s hands.

Modern sawing devices for wood have electronic control, which allows you to automatically arrange the saws in the desired position with millimeter precision.

In addition, such models have a laser ruler for setting workpieces and a function for switching saw rotation speeds.

The video will tell you in more detail how the edge trimmer works.

Domestic-made edge trimming machines of various modifications are sold on the Russian market. The significant difference in price is due to the quality and functionality of the devices. Imported options are also available. But their price is significantly higher.

The most popular single-saw machines are the Kedr and Taiga brands. Of the two-saw machines, the most popular are the TsOD 450, Taiga K2M, and Avangard models.

How to make a machine with your own hands?

It is unlikely that you can create a two-saw device yourself. Yes, it is not needed for household use. For an amateur workshop, a homemade single-saw edge trimmer is quite suitable. Creating such a device would be quite expensive. To create an edge trimmer, you will need:

  • metal pipes, channels and angles
  • electric motor
  • shafts, for example, from agricultural machinery
  • Circular Saw
  • tools for working with metal, such as an angle grinder, drill, welding machine
  • connecting elements - bolts, nuts, couplers.

The first step is to create a strong, reliable, stable frame. A poor-quality bed will cause vibrations, as a result of which crooked cuts appear and the saw deteriorates.

It is best to create a frame from metal channels. The legs must be welded to the frame welded from them.

After this, it is worth welding the corners to the top of the frame along the longitudinal sides and making a groove for mounting the shafts along which the cutting carriage will move.

In the shape of the letter “P” you need to weld metal channels to form the carriage. Next you need to weld the crossbar along which the saw will move. The next step is the installation of the power unit. You need to choose it very responsibly. If you decide to use a circular saw with a diameter of 250 mm, then you need to buy a motor that can provide a rotation speed of at least 5000 rpm.

Why do you need an edging machine?

As soon as the material is cut, all the necessary parts are cut out, their edges are covered with tape made of various materials. These are mainly materials based on PVC, paper, and treated fabrics. This procedure is designed to solve several problems at once.

Decorative design. Edgebanding tapes come in a variety of textures and colors. The most commonly used material is one that imitates the texture of wood or stone.

Slab protection. The tape used to cover the edges is made from polymer-based materials. It is characterized by high strength and wear resistance. This coating protects the slab from possible physical damage, moisture penetration, and structural destruction due to swelling.

Protecting people from harmful fumes. A modern wood-based board is created using high-quality materials and binders, however, chipboard can release toxins during the first months of operation. The laminated chipboard edger is designed to protect the owner from the harmful influence of his own furniture.

Devices of this type are highly specialized, however, such a machine must certainly be in the household of a craftsman who makes furniture.

Types of edging machines

The industry produces various edging machines that differ in a number of characteristics

When choosing a model for your own workshop, you should pay attention to a number of specific features of a particular device. First of all, devices are divided by design into manual and stationary

The difference is obvious - the hand tool is held in the hands, moving it along the end of the workpiece. As it moves, the edge banding machine (edge banding, as it is also called) prepares the tape, glues it and presses it against the end of the slab. The stationary machine is installed motionless, the workpieces are placed on the tabletop and moved along the working module.

Note! Stationary machines differ in the type of workpiece feeding. There are devices with manual feed and fully automatic

Manual feed machines are small in size and can work with curved workpieces. Automatic ones do not require the presence of an operator, but only process straight edges.

Also, stationary devices can be classified by degree of complexity. There are three categories:

  • simple machine;
  • medium complexity device with cutting function;
  • professional edging device.

Simple machines can only glue edges; most often, PVC tape with an adhesive composition has already been applied is used for this. Subsequent trimming and alignment is done manually. Medium complexity machines, in addition to pasting, cut off excess material. As for professional devices, they are capable of creating a perfectly leveled surface, often with polishing.

How to make the device yourself

Since the units in question have a fairly high price on the market, many craftsmen are willing to spend some time making them themselves. In principle, this option will also be quite sufficient for normal operation, but here you will have to pay more attention to safety precautions and use the device very carefully.

First, you need to acquire the necessary components. The standard package includes:

  1. Automatic trim cutting unit.
  2. The rotation control unit for the rotation of the rollers feeding the tape is good if it is equipped with a special indicator.
  3. A place for heating the glue, some kind of thermostat.
  4. Adhesive tape supply unit.
  5. Guides that will help to properly fix the workpiece.

If you have stocked up with everything you need, you can start assembling. Of course, nothing prevents you from moving a little away from the accepted configuration and adding some of your own additional components that will help make the device more convenient and functional.

It is very difficult to give any specific advice on assembly, because you cannot predict what parts a person will be able to find and how he will manage them. The main thing to do is to look at a typical diagram of the unit and connect the specified components in the correct order. First, filling the material for cladding, then stretching it with the application of glue, further delivery to the wooden product and sticker.

As a conclusion, it is worth noting that any person who has experience working with mechanisms, basic electronics and tools will be able to make an edge banding machine with their own hands. A little imagination - and you will get what you want.

The operating principle of an edge banding machine and some device options

This device is widely used both in private workshops and on an industrial scale. The following can be used as working material for decorating wooden products:

The typical width of the cladding is approximately 2-5 centimeters, and the thickness can vary between 0.4-3 millimeters.

Next, the desired wooden part is brought to the device and the prepared tape is glued along its edge. This happens very simply - you just need to move the device along the tree, pressing it lightly.

Of course, if we are talking about making an edge banding machine with your own hands, then it is unlikely to have some of the advanced functions of a factory product, for example, heating the glue. Although it is quite easy to organize even this mechanism - it just takes a little more patience and time.

As for the types of the device in question, the following options are distinguished:

  • For working with curved edges. Usually, manual feeding of material is used here, since the master needs to adjust in time to the next bend on the part and rushing for an automatic belt will definitely not work.
  • For straight cutting. Such products, as a rule, have automatic feeding. They are most often used in the mass production of furniture or other things made of wood.

Manufacturing process

First we make a strong and reliable frame. Metal channels are suitable for this stage. They must first be cleaned of rust and damage. If we take the dimensions of a machine with dimensions of 6.5/2.5/1.0 meters as an example, we will need to weld a frame of the appropriate dimensions and adapt stable legs to it.

Then we perform the following manipulations:

  1. At the top of the frame, corners are welded along the longitudinal sides, which will serve to move the working carriage.
  2. Then a groove is made for mounting the shafts.
  3. The channels are welded together in the shape of the letter “P”, serving as the basis for the carriage itself.
  4. A crossbar designed to move the saw is attached by welding.
  5. The motor is being installed. Here you need to be especially careful. It should be taken into account that to ensure the correct operation of equipment with a disk with a diameter of 250 millimeters, an engine providing a speed of at least five thousand revolutions per minute is suitable.
