Metal detecting is an extremely exciting hobby; it originated in the mid-20th century. A century later, the simplest metal detectors were replaced by complex multifunctional models, which is why the cost of devices for searching for metal targets cannot be called low. What to do if you really want to try your hand at treasure hunting, but you have no desire to spend a tidy sum on buying a metal detector. There is a solution - to assemble a metal detector with your own hands. Which is easily doable if you have basic knowledge of electrical engineering and radio design.

Advantages of Pirate metal detectors
- One of the advantages of the Pirate kit is that the assembly instructions detail such parameters as the number of turns of wire for different diameters (11 sizes: from 120mm to 1.8m) to create coils of different sizes and shapes, depending on the search tasks and intended goals. Setting up a metal detector
Two variable resistors are all the controls that are available to the treasure hunter. The first resistor is a tuning resistor. In the diagram it is designated as R12. It must provide such resistance that when detuned from the ground, the tuning R13 would occupy the middle position.
Ground balancing is also a sensitivity adjustment. It is performed as follows: place the coil on the ground. Turn the adjustment potentiometer to the right. The speaker begins to make a continuous crackling sound. We turn to the left until the metal detector clicks occasionally - once every second and a half. Once we have achieved this result, we can walk.
Important! A pulse metal detector takes time to stabilize. Therefore, we start turning the resistor and walking no earlier than 30 seconds after turning on the power.

Repair features
It’s difficult to talk about repairing handicraft appliances. If a treasure hunter has enough oil in his head and straight hands to assemble the device, he will probably have enough of the same components to repair it. We can only limit ourselves to general advice on prevention: the metal detector is not waterproof. Do not immerse the control unit in water unless it is specifically sealed.
Store-bought or homemade poles can be repaired using a knee, straight arms and blue electrical tape. A good knife on your belt or in your backpack in this case will not be superfluous at all.

Comparison with other models

A set of parts for self-assembly of the pulse metal detector “PIRAT”
(modified version)
A set of parts (microcircuits, resistors, capacitors, and a printed circuit board) for self-assembly of the PIRATE metal detector. To assemble this kit you will need a multimeter. With a correctly soldered circuit, the device works immediately, but to set it to maximum sensitivity, you may need to select the parameters of the radio elements and adjust the coil. During repairs, in addition to a multimeter, you may need an oscilloscope.
The photo shows a sample of the assembled board and a possible coil option. The reel is not included in the set.

Performance largely depends on setup, build quality, parts used, coil diameter, power supply, etc.
For power supply, it is better to use a battery or batteries connected in series up to 12V (1.2V x 9pcs or 3.7V x 3pcs). If you are using a Krona type battery, it is better to take 3 pcs and connect them in parallel. The connectors can be taken from old batteries.

Design features
Unlike conventional VLF devices, the Pirate metal detector is built according to the PI - Pulse Induction scheme. Actually, the developers made up the name itself from PI and RAT - the names of their site.
From here we get all the delights of PI: the absence of any discrimination and so-so depth indicators - the Pirate sees a coin at a depth of up to 20 cm, and large metal parts - up to 1.5 meters. But the price is that it is realistic to assemble a working device and not exceed the estimate of 500 rubles. Even with the draconian dollar exchange rate.
