To make a homemade winch, the author used a starter from a VAZ 21015. The engine from a car starter is designed for short-term operation and quickly overheats, but is quite suitable for making an electric winch.

We will also need a reduction gearbox from a hammer drill; you can find a gearbox at a flea market; in this homemade product, the author took a gearbox from an old Soviet-made drill with a gear ratio of 1 x 20.

The motor shaft needs to be connected to the gearbox shaft; this can be done using an adapter coupling and cotter pins, or simply weld them together.

Now we will make a drum for the winch from a piece of metal tube and sheet metal 3 mm thick.

A bolt is fixed in the pipe for fastening the cable.

We cut out two circles from metal with a hole in the middle and weld them to the pipe.

The gear and shaft need to be welded to the drum. In this homemade product, the shaft and gear are taken from a decommissioned oil pipeline valve mechanism.

Drum-type devices for lifting or moving heavy objects differ in the way they transmit torque. From our school physics course we know how the shoulder works. Losing in speed or distance, we gain in strength. The phrase of Archimedes: “Give me a fulcrum, and I will turn the Earth upside down” precisely describes the principle of operation of the winch.

A manual winch, with the help of an attached shoulder, increases human strength so much that one operator can move cars or lift weights of several hundred kilograms. Although the principle of operation is the same (from a mechanical point of view), these devices have different methods of execution.

I understand that in the diagram of this chainsaw craft, everything looks like a complete mess. But, let's take it one step at a time: The power unit is a chainsaw. The clutch is automatic, the engine is connected to the body by a reduction gearbox. The gearbox is attached at three points: in two places to the frame and in one place to the front bracket. The walk-behind tractor frame is welded from rectangular pipes.

Manual drum winch - varieties

A hand winch with a drum is a classic of the genre. In addition to the common element - the pulley on which the cable is wound, the devices have different types of drive.

Single speed gear drive

A large, main gear is firmly attached to the drum. The entire load falls on it, and on the fastening. Therefore, the reliability of the elements must be at the proper level. In mesh with the main one, there is a small driving gear.

The ratio of the number of teeth is the value of the gear ratio. In other words, gain. The drive gear is integral with the drive shaft. Since we are talking about a hand tool, a handle is attached to the shaft for rotation.

The length of the lever also affects the degree of reinforcement. The larger the handle arm, the less effort you need to apply.

With the help of such devices, you can single-handedly lift several centners of cargo or move a car weighing 2-3 tons. At the same time, the rotation speed of the drum is quite high.

Multi-speed gear drive

The design consists of two or more pairs of gears, each of which has a gain of tens of times. With sequential engagement, these coefficients add up, multiplying the force.

The other side of the coin is a proportional reduction in speed. Having such a winch, you can slowly vertically lift loads of more than a ton, but if you have to work with two bags of cement, the lifting time will stretch for tens of minutes.

Therefore, manufacturers have provided the opportunity to use each pair of gears separately. By fixing the handle on a straight pair, we get medium force at high speed. By transferring it to the second pair, we lose speed, but double our strength.

A mandatory element of all manual winches is a stopper, or “pawl”

It works on the principle of a ratchet mechanism. After the force on the handle stops, the teeth of the sprocket rest against the stopper, preventing the cable from unwinding under the weight of the load. This improves safety, but the mechanism has a disadvantage.

It works perfectly when going up, but is completely useless when going down. During reverse rotation, the pawl is simply thrown to the side, releasing the ratchet.

Worm drive

To increase the force, a worm mechanism is used. The principle of calculating the transmission pair, compared to flat gears, is somewhat different, but the technique is the same. A small-diameter helical gear rotates the main gear mounted on the drum.

The advantage of the design is the high gain. Another plus is that the design is self-locking. That is, if you do not apply force to the handle, the machine will stop. This increases safety and comfort.

The handle can be rotated in any direction, lifting and lowering the load - without fear of it falling off.

My grandfather made an original device from scraps in his garage for pulling out a car if it got stuck.

I took a steel pipe and welded a metal “ear” to it on the side. In another piece of pipe, he made 2 holes opposite each other and welded a nut in their place, and a bolt to them - it turned out to be a kind of clamp.

They also need: a steel pin, a sledgehammer and a reliable and strong cable.

This pin is driven into the dense ground, and first, a “hole” is drilled out with a hand-made homemade drill.

He puts his “devices” on the pin. One end of the cable is attached to the machine, and the other to its own device.

And then he inserts the handle of a shovel into the “ear” (he says that those who go hunting or fishing in the forest always take a shovel with them). You can use a crowbar.

And it starts to spin, and at the same time the stuck car itself slowly begins to emerge from the hole. It turns out to be a kind of hand winch.

It is better to use a cable of the “Hercules” type - this is a strong rope - a combination of steel wire and synthetic rope. Well, the car one often copes.

Using a hand lever winch

To move cargo into the body of a car, drag the carcass of an animal, or rescue a car stuck off-road, a manual lever winch is used. The installers call it a “frog”.

You can purchase a ready-made device, but homemade craftsmen make the device with their own hands. The design consists of a frame with a drum fixed inside, to which the sprocket from the ratchet mechanism is attached. A handle is attached to the drum shaft; when the lever is moved repeatedly, the load rises as if in jumps, hence the name of the device. The ratchet will not allow the load to fall off.

Steps to achieve high build quality:

  • The work is done slowly and thoughtfully. A raw, unfinished unit cannot be used.
  • Follow the drawing.
  • Weld seams are treated with an anti-corrosion compound. Welding is done in carbon dioxide to obtain a high-quality seam.
  • The electric drive control panel is placed as far away from rotating parts as possible.
  • Electrical wiring is carefully insulated. The contacts are protected by additional insulation from moisture and dirt.

Negative results often arise due to hasty actions. The issue of moving cargo in a horizontal plane with its own device will be successfully resolved. To lift loads above the ground, the cable must be pulled over a strong support.

Manual winch drawings

The design drawings of this manual winch are of an overview nature, since the size of the worm gear depends on the geometry of the shaft used, as well as the worm gear.

The structure consists of the following elements:

• worm gears; • cable winding shaft; • brass bushing; • housings; • pens.

Worm gears

This part must be selected taking into account the rated load capacity of the winch. Based on the dimensions and the proposed diagram, we can make a simple mechanism for lifting the load.

It can be a solid structure, or welded from several elements.

Brass bushing

Due to the brass bushing, the shaft slides when rotating. This design option is suitable for temporary work. For continuous use of the mechanism, we use rolling bearings instead of bushings. Due to this, the design will become more complex and at the same time more expensive. If necessary, as the bushings wear out, they can be replaced. This will be a cheaper solution.

For manufacturing, we take a bent steel unequal-flange channel GOST 8281-80 and sheet metal GOST 19903-74. In our case, the body is made of channel 200x50x30x4 mm and sheet metal 4 mm thick. The body uses a long and short channel, which are fastened using a left and right plate, and an M8 bolt connection.

To make the handle, a metal fragment and a wooden insert were used. To fasten the handle to the shaft, a 10x36 GOST 3128-70 pin is used.

Worm gear device

Before starting assembly, mark the fastening points with your own hands, using not only the drawing, but also applying the existing blanks. This will allow you to determine the correct location points where it is possible to cut something off or replace a part that is not suitable in size. Quite stringent requirements are imposed on the operation of the mechanism: no wobbles, excessive tightness of fit, so that the parts do not wear out prematurely.

The proposed drawing is used as a guide for the work. The dimensions of the structure depend on the Glist gear. It is selected taking into account the required winch performance. Based on the parameters of the worm gear, a lifting device is manufactured according to the diagram.

Components and their role in the winch:

  1. The Glist gear, which must have strong teeth and sufficient thickness, transmits force to the shaft.
  2. It is made from thick-walled pipe. A round piece of metal with a diameter similar to the inner ring of the gear is welded at one end. To fix the cable, drill a hole through it.
  3. Bearings on which the shaft rotates. If the work is planned to be intermittent, it is permissible to use bushings.
  4. The case is durable and made exactly to size. The design must ensure that there are no gaps between the mechanism components.

Glist gear
The frame is assembled from two pieces of channel with a wide flange of 200 mm, different in size: 300 and 400 mm. The long one is located on the right side, where the gear and drive handle are installed. Sections of 4 mm metal are also used. Through holes for the shaft are marked and drilled in the channels, as well as 4 more for the side plates. These are two rectangular pieces with a triangular cutout in the bottom right corner.

Collected in the following sequence:

  • Bearings or bushings made of brass are installed on both ends of the shaft;
  • put on the plates and secure them to the channel with bolts with groovers for the nuts;
  • put the gear on the shaft, fix it with a key, install a metal sleeve;
  • finally assembled first from the side of the long channel, then from the short one.

The mechanism is ready for use for any purpose. It is indispensable in construction; it is used to pull out cars and install them in garages. To reduce the load on the drum, a block system is used.

  1. Drive a crowbar or a small diameter tube into the ground to create an axle.
  2. A larger diameter tube is placed on the axle, to which a cable is attached.
  3. A lever is slipped under the lower turn of the cable. This could be another tube, a shovel handle, or a pole. The main thing is that the material is durable.

Step one. Preparing the disk

We choose a disk of a suitable diameter; the author’s disk is slightly smaller than the diameter of his car wheel. In general, a car disk can be adapted for such purposes. All we need to do is weld the hooks to the disk, and then everything depends on the design of the disk. If it is a steel disk with holes, you will succeed, but if it is cast, you will have to tinker.

We apply the disk to the car and make marks in the places where the hooks will be installed.

We install our self-extractor on the car disk. Of course, the puller must be installed on the drive wheel; the author has it at the front. Next, we insert the rope into the hole in the disk and tie a knot, wind the rope, the author has 20 m of it. But what should the rope catch on? Everything is very simple, we need a steel stake, which we hammer into the ground with a sledgehammer and tie a rope to it.

That's all, you can try it. The author starts off without any problems and easily climbs the hill even under such terrible conditions. The problem can only arise if the second wheel freezes or slips heavily, then the differential will not allow us to pull the car out of the trap. But this happens rarely and in most cases this winch will save you. In order for the winch to work best, the diameter of the self-retrieving disk should be as small as possible.

  • Cylindrical, are one or more pairs of gears in one plane, meshed. Rotation is transferred from the smaller wheel to the larger one. They have high reliability, but less tractive effort. Convenient for use when constructing homemade winches.

Planetary gearbox, the most common at the moment. It usually consists of 3 satellites, a sun gear, a ring gear and a carrier. They have an increased working life and transmitted power, but are complex in design.

Manufacturing a system with a universal drive

The manual system is easy to manufacture. Of the special skills the master is required to do, only own a welding machine. Any metal will do the job. The appearance of the device is not so important, the main thing is performance and resistance to heavy loads. The frame should not be deformed.

Materials and tools:

  • Rectangular tube for frame.
  • Shaft for the drum, you can use a round tube.
  • A sheet of metal with a thickness of at least 3 mm for the manufacture of drum disks.
  • Threaded rods M10-M12, 24 cm long – 6 pieces, nuts.
  • Tube diameter 14 mm - 6 identical pieces of 20 cm.
  • Asterisks - large and small. Chain.
  • Hubs to secure the drum to the shaft and secure the shaft to the frame.
  • Drive lever.
  • Cable with carabiner.
  • Welding and electrodes.
  • Grinder and grinding disc for it.
  • Paint and primer.
  • Wrenches included in the set.

Some materials are better purchased - for example, tubes for the studs and shaft. The rest can be picked up from old mechanisms - cars or motorcycles. Any metal will do, even used.

Manufacturing procedure:

  1. They sketch out a drawing, because this will make it easier to navigate during assembly - you won’t have to stand guessing over the half-finished product and think about what to do next.
  2. Cut out the frame parts from a pipe with a cross-section of 2 by 2 cm. Connect the frame parts together strictly perpendicularly. The cut on the workpieces is made at an angle of 45 degrees.
  3. Lay the frame blanks on a flat surface. The joints are spot-tightened by welding, after which they check whether everything is installed correctly. The angles of the connections must be strictly 90 degrees. If there is a lack of accuracy, corrections are made and then the parts are welded.
  4. Scale is removed with a grinder and a grinding wheel. The finished frame is sanded and then coated with a primer. After the latter has dried, the metal is painted with enamel in 2 layers. You can use regular paint. The goal is to protect the metal from corrosion, since operating conditions will be difficult, with dirt and moisture.
  5. Creating a drum. Take a sheet of metal and cut out 2 circles, their diameter is about 30 cm. On each circle you need to make 7 holes:
      One in the center. The diameter must match the shaft size.
  6. 6 holes at a distance of 7 cm.
  7. The discs are fastened together using pins. The pin is inserted into the hole of one disk in a vertical position. Tubes with a diameter of 14 cm are put on the studs, and a second disk is installed on them. The studs must not only be secured with nuts, but also additionally reinforced with locknuts to ensure reliable connections.
  8. The drum is ready, now the shaft is mounted. It is made from a metal pipe, but you can take a finished product from any mechanism. The latter option is preferable: since the accuracy of the factory part is higher, vibrations of the drum will be small or absent altogether.
  9. A large diameter sprocket is mounted on the shaft on the outside of the drum. A sprocket from a motorcycle gearbox will do. To secure the drum to the frame, the outer sides of the shaft must have hubs.
  10. The drum assembly with the shaft is mounted through the hubs on the frame. The structure is secured with bolts. Before installing the drum, you should prepare a platform on the frame. A drive will be installed on it - manual or electric. When using an electric drive, a motor is placed on the platform with a small sprocket attached to its shaft.
  11. A universal drive is often installed: a handle is placed on the reverse side of the output shaft of the electric motor. In the absence of electricity, the winch can be turned manually.
  12. It is important to properly tension the chain. It should not sag, but strong tension is also unacceptable - this will cause the sprockets to wear out faster, and the chain may break. Check the chain tension by rotating the drum - the chain should not hinder its rotation when the cable is unwound.
  13. The end of the cable is secured to the shaft and wound around the drum. A carabiner is hung on the other, free end of the cable.
  14. A shank is attached to one end of the frame. With its help, the winch is secured to the car frame.

The winch is created in a day. Since it will be installed on an SUV, the operating conditions will be appropriate. To prevent dirt and sediment from getting on the drum, it is covered with a casing. This way the mechanism will last longer and the cable will not wear out.

The design is simple, reliable, and easy to make yourself . Yes, it does not have the ability to change the gear ratio, there is no reverse and other additional functions. A self-made electric winch is capable of dragging a heavy load across the terrain, be it a car or something else.

This is because when the vehicle is stationary, most of the power will come from the battery rather than the alternator. Excessive power consumption can cause the battery to drain quickly. However, too low power consumption can cause a significant reduction in the power of the device.

Recently, versions that can be powered by a 12-volt energy source have become very popular. In such a case, the winch device is connected to the cigarette lighter or the corresponding socket in the car, if available.

Hydraulic

The hydraulic winch is considered the most complex design option, since the design is represented by a combination of the following elements:
